Wisdom Teeth??? please help me!! =\?

hey guys, im getting my wisdom teeth out this friday %26amp; im really scared. I have never had a surgery in my life; especially where i am going to be put to sleep. And for some reason i am really nervous about being put to sleep.... what happens??? For some reason, i am having a really hard time understanding how you actually DO go to sleep, just like that!! I know it is with "anaesthesia"... but what exactly IS anaesthesia?? how does it work?? lol im sorry if im not making sense.... please tell me everything you know about getting your wisdom teeth out %26amp; what to expect.. experiences... anything! b/c this whole thing is totally freaking me out!! thanks so much!!! ill be here waiting... anxiously lol =]

PS: sadly my wisdom teeth are ALL impacted %26amp; im getting all 4 out @ the same time... which makes me even more nervous!! ahhh!! lol

Wisdom Teeth??? please help me!! =\?
I wouldn't worry too much. The dentist will use nitrous oxide or "laughing gas".....(but from what i hear, you don't really laugh, but just go to sleep). I've never done it, but my friends say its totally painless and its so quick you don't even realize you fell asleep. I think they fell asleep in under 10 seconds.

I got all four of my teeth pulled at the same time, but I just had regular novacaine.

Anyways, this is my advice, if you can, use an oral surgeon rather than a general dentist. This can make all the difference in the world. An oral surgeon will surgically remove your teeth while a dentist will just yank em out. Same effect but with more damage. So it really doesnt matter whether you just numb the area or use the gas cuz it doesn't really hurt then. But what you want to do is limit the pain AFTER the anaesthesia wears off. From the people I know that went to a regular dentist, the pain lasted longer and their face was swollen for many days. Haha, not trying to scare you. You'll experience some pain after but its really not all that bad, and if it does hurt, you can always take pain killers. And the actual procedure part will be over before you know it.

Btw, while I'm at it.....brush your teeth well. Wisdom teeth arent that bad, but a root canal is much worse! I had one when I was a kid and now I have to do another one. =(
Reply:i was really nervous too. I've never had surgery either. All of mine were impacted too. They gave me the anesthesia through iv and i was watching cartoons in the room and the next thing i know you just kind of drift off to sleep you don't even realize it and than you wake up. The medicine is still in affect so the pain isn't to bad the first day but after the anesthesia starts wearing off that's when the pain is worse even with the prescribed medicine. But to be honest it wasn't as bad as i thought it was going to be.
Reply:wow, you are so brave to pull all them out, im a timidly to do that, i don't have the courage like you, that why i leave them all there, good luck to you.
Reply:aww.. don't be nervous..it's not bad at all! i just had all four of mine taken out in may. when they put you to sleep, they give you laughing gas first..and it just really calms you...u feel a little loopy, but it's a nice feeling. the doctor will talk to you softly, and things will begin to get faint, then they inject the medicine in your system, and when you wake up it's over....it'll only seem like 5 minutes went by. i wasn't in a lot of pain after having my wisdom extracted either..i barely used the pain medicine, and i recovered VERY fast. the only part that really was uncomfortable, not painful, is when they take the gause out of the pocket a week later, but it's nothing to cry over! you'll be fine! don't be nervous...just think of it as a time to kick back and relax and watch movies....you'll only be tired for a couple of hours b/c of the medicine :) hope i helped
Reply:hahaha dudei got mien out 3 years ago and i got put out.. they give you a pill to relax you so thats all good... youwont remember jsut make sure you have soemone there to drive you home i mean mine wasnt bad... except they didnt give me enough anastheisa and i came out but i was heavily drugged i came out in teh mdidle i dotn remember this but apparently i gave my dentist a good black eye.. opps but its realyl easy my little brother jsut got his wisdom teeth out
Reply:Lucky you! I had to stay awake during mine-left side first, 2 weeks later, right side.

Basically all you need to know is that when they tell you to count, you'll get knocked out lol

Seriously, there are several different kinds of anesthesia, and I don't know which one your dentist is using.

I have had 3 c-sections, and they knocked me out for the first one (she was emergency) and they told me to count to 10. I only made it to 5 lol My whole body felt very heavy, like it was made of lead and I couldn't move it. My head got dizzy, the clock I was watching went blurry, I said "Don't cut me, I'm still awake" then I woke up in recovery lol

Really, nothing at all to be scared about or worried about with being put out. You will be glad you were not awake for the surgery.

As for the wisdom teeth, be prepared to have some pain of course. If you can take ibuprofen, that works well for the pain and swelling.

You will have stitches, and need to care for them. I gargled salt water three times a day and it helped a lot. (I did not start it until the day after though)

You can not smoke or drink threw a straw for the first day, or else you can get a "dry socket" which means a LOT of unnecassry pain. The socket needs to stay moist to heal.

In a week or so, the dentist will take the stitches out, and you'll have these little scars that your tongue will want to play with lol

Oh which reminds me...after the surgery, your tongue will want to play with the stitches and such. Most of the time you do not even realize you're doing this. If you catch yourself doing it, stop immediately as it can not only make your stitches even more sore, but can make a sore on your tongue that can get infected.
Reply:You wont even know what happened. When they put me under I was counting down from ten with the nitrous (laughing gas) mask on and all of a sudden it was all over, I asked the dentist if he had even started yet. I was quite surprised. the anasthesia is I believe a mixture of ketamine and valium. After mine were taken out I was fine an hour later and never really felt much pain at all. dont be worried just take care of yourself and do everything the dentist tells you to do when your healing and you should be fine.
Reply:Don't worry about it. It's not as bad as it sounds. I also had all 4 of my impacted wisdom teeth extracted at the same time, but I wasn't put to sleep. That was even worse since I could hear everything they were doing. But even when awake, I didn't feel any pain with the local anaesthesia, only pressure. When you wake up, the anaesthesia would still be in effect, so you'll feel only numbness. When it finally does wear off, you will have painkillers for the pain, so it'd still be bearable. To minimize the swelling, put an icepack on your cheek for a few minutes a a time, let it rest for a few minutes, then apply again. You can alternate from one side to the other.

Good luck! :)
Reply:You having anesthesia to pull your wisdom teeth??? That is unnecessary. I got all mine pulled just getting numbed up. Not a big deal. I didn't take any pain killers either and actually went shopping right after, I just had gauze to bite down on for a little bit. Totally not a big deal at all. You are more likely to have complications from anesthesia. Good luck. It seriously is no big deal.
Reply:I can understand how looking forward to that would make you nervous. But you should relax. If you've never been under general anesthetic, it's something more scary to think about than to do. When I did it, the doctor told me to count backwards from 100. I said '100. 99, 98' and then I woke up! It's really just like that, just that simple! You have no feeling of 'going to sleep', it's almost more like 'time travel', one minute you're lying on the table in the operating room, the next minute you're waking up in the recovery room.

You feel a little strange when you wake up. You feel weak and sick. It's not painful or scary, just a little disconcerting. It's a little like having drank too much. (I know you never did that, but that's what it's like). You just want to just lie there for a while (and they'll let you just lie there!) That feeling passes pretty quickly. I think this is the effect of last of the anesthetic being used up in your body. In a few minutes you will be able to stand up by yourself and go home.

In the old days they used ether and you breathed it in, and that -really- made you sick. These days they use IV drugs that they pump into your veins. The bad thing is they have to stick you with a needle, but the good thing is that the modern drugs work so much better!

You're lucky to have all four coming out at once and to get it over with. Your mouth will be a little sore for a few days but you get over it very quickly, especially if you're young.

Good luck! Don't be afraid, just relax, everything is going to be fine.
Reply:I was pretty nervous too, my heart beeping thing was out of control. There's nothing to be afraid of though....it's not that bad. They gave me laughing gas first, which basically makes you really lazy. Then they stuck the IV in, which hurts a little. Then.....nothing. I woke up feeling really out of it, but the pain meds were still working for awhile so it didn't really hurt.

The next few days are somewhat unpleasant, but tylenol helped me out a lot. Don't worry, you'll get through it.
Reply:When I had my "wisdom teeth" pulled there was only one on the top and two on the bottom but they all were impacted. Resulting in me being in a lot of pain also. Better to have them all out at once than to drag it out.The doctor or nurse will start an IV in your arm. When the anesthesia is started they will say something like count backwards from 100 - I got to 97, the next thing I knew I was waking up - minus the teeth. And with a mouth full of gauze. It's scary - take someone with you.

Nothing anyone can say will calm you down just

remember alot of other people have gone through this and lived.
Reply:haha YOUR LUCKY YOUR GETTING PUT TO SLEEP... When I got it pulled out I took like 20 shots and stayed awake when they pulled all four of them out for an hour... Honestly the process did not hurt much, I only felt pressure and I was freak out by the surgery I just wanted it to be over !! The worst part is for the next week or two you will not be able to eat !! its really depressing I'm sorry but just be glad your getting it over with... Make sure you take your anti-biotics and pain killers especially... First thing you do make sure you eat before the surgery and go to sleep after the surgery... you can put on ice to make the swelling better... eat soft food like chicken noodles, pudding, jello, soup, etc. NOTHING HARD... don't brush your teeth for the first couple days, but gargle wit' salt water will make the healing process quicker and mouth wash maybe after a few days because if you use mouth wash right away it can prevent your gum from healing... after one week your doctor will take out your stiches it doesnt hurt at all unless u have dissolving stiches... don't worry just make sure you rest a lot and eat soft food and you'll be fine... try not to suck like your straws or gargle too hard it might cause an infection I forgot what it is called but your dentist should give you all the information
Reply:I would be majorly nervous as well. I'm deathly petrified of dentists. My sister recently had her wisdom teeth pulled and she was put to sleep to. She said she didn't feel any pain and doesn't remember anything. She didn't even remember being put to sleep. When she got to the office they gave her this liquid to drink, which contained valium that made her sleepy. Then they did the IV in her arm which had the anesthesia to put her to sleep. She couldn't even remember them putting in the IV. Once you get there and they give you a little dose of happy juice you won't be worried at all and you won't remember anything. The pain wasnt' that bad for her after the fact either. They have her a few pain meds and she was perfectly fine. I'm actually thinking about getting mine pulled out after seeing how easily she breezed through it. It really set my mind at ease. Good luck and I'm positive that you'll be fine.
