I had all 4 wisdom teeth out on Tu, March 18 in the morning. How long should I feel pain?

The bottom two wisdom teeth were both impacted, and the top two had both erupted. I was told the process went fairly quickly and was pretty easy. But nine days later, I still feel pain in my lower jaw, cannot open my mouth much more than an inch or two, and still feel very sore when I try to open my mouth wide. Is this normal? Should I be worried about my healing? I cannot sleep through the night; I have woken up every night since the surgery with pain in my mouth having to take some painkillers to get back to sleep. I am just worried that I may be infected or have some other sort of complication; and now I am also 300 miles away from the office in which I had my teeth removed, because I had them removed while I was home on my spring break. Will another oral surgeon be allowed to treat me if I do have a problem with my wisdom teeth holes?

Thanks for any help!!

nothing is wrong. wisdom teeth are the ones that hurt the most so i'm not suprised that your still hurting, just keep taking those pain killers and it will soon be gone.
Reply:I feel your pain. I had 2 wisdom teeth removed 3 days ago. I was under local anesthesia. I was awful and I'm not going to get the other one removed. The first night i took percocet And went to sleep. I could not open my mouth much either. The second day I went to work and I was much better. I was talking more and my face was only swollen a little. If you feel iffy call your dentist. I called mine the first night because I didn't think the holes were clotting but it takes time. I woke up the next morning and everything was fine. Are you still bleeding. I hope not. The clots should have formed. IF you must, another oral surgeon will treat you. Good Luck
Reply:Since yours were impacted it took the dentist a lot longer to take them out. They had to cut into your gum, etc. It's normal for you to still be sore. But if you are waking up in that much pain it might be infected. You can always call your oral surgeon and ask if it's normal to be in that much pain.
Reply:It could be a couple different things. If its the lower ones that are bothering you it's possible that you have a dry socket. That's when the blood clot that was in there is no longer there leaving the socket exposed. This can be very painful and the only way to stop the pain is to have a dry socket dressing placed in the socket. That will help tremendously. If it's not a dry socket, it could just be that your muscles are stiff and the best thing to do now would be to put hot compresses on it since it's been 9 days. From what your saying it sounds like a dry socket to me. Good Luck!!
Reply:I would say that if you're still in this much pain, you should at least give your oral surgeon a call. I just had the same procedure done this week, and I totally feel your pain!

Call your surgeon, see what they have to say. At the same time, look into what your insurance policy covers. There's a good chance that it would cover a visit to another dentist, especially if you went in as "urgent care". Call your insurance company or, if you're under your parents' insurance, maybe they could look into it for you.

In the mean time, keep taking the pain killers without relying on them too much. Also, my surgeon recommended jaw exercises and even chewing soft, sugar-free gum to help get my jaw loosened up again. Maybe that will help you some. Good luck, I hope that things work out for you!
