I am having all 4 wisdom teeth extracted under general anaesthetic, what will this be like?

I have been told it will take 2-3 weeks to recover by my surgeon but from speaking to friends/colleagues who have had wisdom teeth extracted this seems like a long time.

The surgeon explained that she will need to cut the gums, remove bone, take thetop of each tooth off, remove more bone and then extract the roots individually as I have a nerve running close by to some of the teeth, also each tooth is impacted differently (they are all pointing in different directions)

Does anyone have any experience of this procedure?

my friend had her wisom teeth cut out last year and it took her like 2 weeks to recover. When you have them pulled its not as bad...but hey atleast you'll prolly get oxycottin or something good!
Reply:Yes. It's not painfull if you're under a general anaethetic, you'll have to be careful for af while after though so as not to open the gums up again. You're surgeon should pack the gums to stop excessive bleeding. Once fully healed it's a great relief
Reply:your case is obviously more complicated than mine was.i took leave for 3 days because of all the stories i heard.i could have gone back to work the next day.
Reply:I had exactly done what you are going to have done. One good thing though....oxycottin....remember this is your best friend. It took me about 4 weeks for the swelling and pain to go away. Also I had a piece of bone come off and work itself into my upper gum. This worked its way in, until it completely blocked my Silvia duct. Not to bad until....my body decided that it needed to make more Silvia from the other three. (Each corner of your mouth has one) Now a drool in my sleep.....Gross!
Reply:It's certainly not a fun procedure, but it's not painful during the process, and you do get really good painkillers afterwards. So it's not the worst thing ever.

You will feel a lot of tugging and pressure on your head and jaw. And what I thought was the weirdest part, is that you can "hear" the sounds of the teeth breaking and some other noises that are pretty unsettling.

Oh! Your under general anesthetic. I got LOCAL anesthetic. You get to be unconscious for the whole procedure. You lucky duck!

But it isn't too painful, unless there is a weird complication, and those aren't that common they just make better stories so you hear more of them.

It's just one of those things we all have to go through. You'll be much happier after you've had them removed.
Reply:I had the same procedure done when I had my wisdom teeth removed. The procedure itself is a breeze. They knock you out and do the surgery. You may be partially awake when it happens, but you won't feel a thing. You'll have to have someone drive you though -- you'll be in no shape to drive afterward. After the anesthetic wears off, however, it hurts like all get-out. Make sure they give you a scrip for Tylenol 3 or Vicodin or something like that. It takes 3-5 days for the pain to go away completely, but after that you have to be careful and do what they tell you to do to take care of your gums or else you'll get dry sockets. All in all, it does take 2-3 weeks for you to completely recover from the surgery, but that includes the time it takes for the holes in your mouth to heal over completely.
