Swelling after wisdom tooth extraction?

I had an impacted wisdom tooth out on wednesday at the hospital, it wasn't as straight forward as the dentist thought. After 1/2 hour of hideousness, some of my jaw bone being ground away and a second lot of injections it finally came out.

I understand this was a pretty tough thing for my face and jaw bone to deal with, but how long should the swelling last for? it is actually worse today than it was yesterday is this normal?

Swelling after wisdom tooth extraction?
I had a wisdom tooth out last year and although I didn't have any of the trouble you had, it still took nearly two weeks to heal, you also might have a funny taste in your mouth, this is cos you have an open wound in there. Actually my experience of having teeth pulled was nice as I had an injection in the back of my hand to relax me, can't remember the tooth extraction, then, I floated home. If you are in pain, go to the doctors.
Reply:Were you given any antibitoics?, the swelling should go down after a few days, if it hasnt go to your dentist and explain what happened, you need to do salt mouthwashes and keep it clean, i no it is sore but the mouthash will help heal the socket. It will take a few months for the gum to heal completely but the sockety should close within a few weeks. If you have any concerns go to your dentist and get it looked at .
Reply:It will be there for a few days, keep taking the antibiotics, I expect he has given you some Metronidazole at least, keep taking the full course of whatever he has given. You can take an anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen, that will help.

If he has given you metronidazole, whatever you do dont drink any alcohol on them. The mix very badly with booze and you will be horribly sick.

And yes, its normal for it to swell up more before it starts going down.

Hope you feel better soon.
Reply:The swelling is completely normal. It should go down in a few days. When I got my wisdom teeth pulled, the dentist said that if it wasn't necessary (it was hitting on a nerve) he wouldn't touch it because it was complicated. The right side of my face swelled so big it looked like I had a humongous jaw breaker in my mouth.
Reply:i had 4 wisdom teeth out and i looked like elephant woman for about two weeks, then to top it off i got an infection in my gums and was unable to eat for a while, only good thing was i lost half a stone!!
Reply:i have just had 4 wisdom teeth out in one go. kinda regretting it now, but you're not alone in the swelling dept. my jaw looks unbelievable, almost double the size. today is day 3 and looks like it may be starting to go down but only just.
Reply:on thursday i had 2 impacted wisdom teeth out, 2 additional wisdom teeth and 4 pre-molars out... i think i take the prize! lol anyway, the extractions dont really hurt anymore, but all my remaining teeth are aching and my jaws are huge! it's the 4th day and the swelling hasnt gone down yet. i iced the 1st two days and rotated heat yesterday... hopefully it goes down soon...
Reply:Had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out under general anesthetic back in June! Although there was not a lot of pain I had massive sweeling. I was off work for 10 days. Make sure you swill your mouth with salt warm water. You can take 2 paracetamol and 2 iboprofun together every four hours depending on your age and also go buy some arnichea as it helps with the bruising and swelling. They don't give you antibiotics anymore unless there was an infection in the area previously. Its normal for the surrounding area to be sore or teeth in the area to feel a bit loose due to the battering they have received. The swelling should start to go right down given a week maximum if not then phone your dentist there should be limited or no pain after about 4 days. Good luck. Its not a nice experience but almost everyone has to go through it as wisdom teeth are not required.
