What does it mean when a wisdom tooth is impacted?

An impacted tooth means it grows into the space of a neighboring tooth. It can cause pressure on itself and the tooth next to it, cause the teeth to shift, and stunt tooth eruption (breaking through the gum). Impacted wisdom teeth are generally removed (extracted). It is a very common dental procedure.

Reply:Here you go. This tooth is confused about which way to grow. "Impacted" means "blocked out," but it is usually because the wisdom tooth is confused and not the other way around.

DR. SAM PROVIDES A GOOD EXPLANATION. THE WISDOM TOOTH IS SUPPOSED TO ERUPT IN A STRAIGHT WAY, BUT WHEN IT TRIES TO GROW IN AT THE WRONG ANGLE AND BECOMES JAMMED UP AGAINST ANOTHER TOOTH PREVENTING CORRECT ERUPTION, IT'S CALLED "IMPACTED."

If it's coming in towards another tooth, your other teeth will get pushed out of place and possibly come loose, or at least start pushing teeth in front of other teeth, or shoving the whole row of teeth in one direction... not pretty.





Mine started growing straight out of the inside of my jaw towards my tongue. Not sure if that's 'impacted' per se... but nevertheless they get infected that way, and have to come out.





I just wanted to chime in and suggest that you have the teeth on the worst side pulled, then wait a couple weeks for the other side, if possible. So you have one side of your mouth to eat on. Just thinking about eating everything out of a blender makes me gag....
