I am getting my four wisdom teeth out tommorrow. Please help/?

I have four impacted teeth. My bottom two are horizontally impacted. The doctor said he will be giving me novacaine and an iv. He said the IV does NOT make you totally unconscious and is used in addition to the novacaine. Should I be worried? What will I be able to feel? WIll I know where I am? How long will it take

I am getting my four wisdom teeth out tommorrow. Please help/?
i had mine out last week, the same way, it took about twenty minutes in the chair total, you will know where you are but you wont give a hoot, you will hear them and feel some slight tugging in your mouth but no pain, and dont worry, they do this all the time, one of mine was grown right to my jaw bone and three others were impacted in my jaw sideways, i took hydrocodone for two days and have felt fine since, the most pain in my mouth was where they stuck in the needles ........good luck
Reply:You might feel pressure, but not pain. It won't be that bad afterwards if you have a good doctor.
Reply:yes your doctor is a alien from outerspace and he will eat your brains
Reply:i have never gotten it done but she said in great detail that it hurt and it kept hurting dont no if it helped but =))
Reply:sorry, i dont know all the answers, im not a doctor or anything, i just wanted to say that if your doctor is giving it to you and he trusts it then i dont think there will be a problem. if you are worried and nervous, ask him the questions that you just asked us, and he can maybe use anasthesia (sp?)
Reply:You will not feel anything. I'll be surprised if you remember anything. However, I had the same type of wisdom tooth. It's pretty hard to extract it. You will not feel it during the procedure but you sure will after a few hours and for a couple of days. I can still the massive headache it caused.
Reply:trust your dentist! He does not hurt his clients. You may feel pressure but that is all. Worry is worthless.
Reply:My advice to you is find an oral surgeon that will put you out cold and do 2 at a time at the most.
Reply:I had my four taken out all at once.

I saw a surgeon too.

I was out.

it took about 2 hours I think. I woke up in the middle of it and heard them CRACK my tooth in 4 pieces. I HEARD it but didn't feel it. They noticed I was awake and hit me with another dose.

To me the whole thing felt like 2 minutes.

I had sore gums for only about 4 days afterwards

I don't know of an IV a "dentist" use when taking out wisdom teeth, maybe morphine.

are you sure its not a surgeon your going to see?

Still I wouldn't worry about it. You won't feel a thing and will PROBABLY pass out from the morphine.

anyway. these guys are in business to make money with repeat customers. If they hurt you, you won't come back right??? these guys are professionals and know what they are doing. Trust them.

I even take my dentist to the bar and we have a few drinks.

He's been my friend after I was his customer and I trust him.

don't take anything before going in and don't eat (mixtures of drugs can make you sick and the drugs they use by themselves can make you vomit if you ate alot.

you don't want vomit in your mouth when they have you jaw cut open and bleeding

afterwards when they give you your vicodine perscription feel free to stop when you don't feel much pain anymore.

vicodine can become extremely addictive if used for long periods of time (I've beenn addicted for 9 years)

use it only if you need and/or want to
Reply:if it's Western Dental don't trust them unless you can have another adult that you know present. I have never heard of anyone having an IV for dental work in my life. You have every right to cancel and go to another dentist
Reply:It will hurt so bad ... not at first but after you get them pulled and you medicine wears off. You may have some pain killers that they give you but nothing will cure the pain you will suffer through for 3 full weeks
Reply:It numbs, he pulls out, the numbness wears off in a while. Take advils for the pain. No sucking on straw, eat soft food, no smoking. If you are a smoker give 45 mins to an hour to smoke. Make sure you have a good blood clot , or you get a chance of dry socket. But that very rarely.

Then you have to deal with the gaps in your gums where the teeth were at. Till they heal up. Wisdom heals quicker then any other teeth. Believe me I know.
Reply:take some pain meds before you go, or have a couple shots of jack daniels, or both, lol .mothernature would probably help you too. if you have antibiotics i would have already been taking them. your dentist should not have too hard of a time removing them , the problem is if they break then you will need a oral surgeon, the dentist should already have taken x-rays to see how bad they are, if they are impacted he/she should have had you on antibiotics also,
Reply:i have had wisdom teeth pulled out when i was 13, and what i remember was that i DID know where i was, and if it hurts just a little bit tell them so they can numb it out immediately. its took about 1 1/2 hours for me... its really not that bad except you look like a chipmunk for the rest of the day.
Reply:Ooo your in for some pain, I had my four taken out plus two more, they didn't give me enough novacaine I think, because I felt them poking around but it didn't hurt, but afterwards, DAMN, my mouth was full of gauze and bleeding a lot, they should write you a prescription for some pain killers though, other than that you won't feel anything painful DURING the operation, good luck...
Reply:I would imagine you will know where you are since he is not putting you under. You will defintely feel pressure like he is working in there. The real fun comes afterward though. I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled at the same time (impacted) and the pain afterward is pretty brutal. Not the worse pain in my life but for like a week your defintely gonna feel it. You will have swelling and won't be able to eat much. It has been quite awhile since I had mine done but that is what I remember. So good luck to you and don't be scared. It will be over before you know it. The rest of your teeth and your mouth will be better off for it. Good luck.
Reply:I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth taken out late last year, however I was completly unconscious.

I don't think that you should be worried, I didn't feel anything during the surgery. You will know where you are when you wake up, my surgery took approx 1 1/2 hours.

Keep in mind that you will only be able to eat really soft foods, eg mashed potato and soup as you wont be able to open your mouth ver much.

The swelling and bruising lasts for about 1 week.

It is well worth it in the end as you will be completly pain free.

Good luck
Reply:I just had the same procedure last week. You shouldn't be worried at all. During the procedure you won't feel much because not only will you be out of it, your mouth will be numb. You will have a sense about when you are. It takes about two to three hours. Listen carefully, after a couple of days of the meds, which will probably be Hyrocodiene, you will start feeling a littke better but by all means don't stop the meds until your follow up! Other than that be prepared to eat soup and mashed potatoes. If you want meat or better flavored food try ravioli or beefaroni. Be sure to rinse your mouth after eating. And DON'T drink with a straw.
Reply:Even though the IV might not make you totally unconscious, it will probably knock you out. When I got my wisdom teeth pulled, the IV made me go to sleep and only woke up once during the procedure, only to go immediatly back to sleep. If your asleep you won't feel anything at all, but if your awake, I can't comment on that. After you wake up, it depends on the person. Me and my sister were out of it, but knew where we were. My brother on the other hand was just the same as when he walked in. People react different. Some swell and need lots of pain meds, other don't swell at all and can go on with daily things. The hardest part is the bleeding after. Your mouth is so numb that you can't spit or swallow so it's a task getting your mouth clean and changing the cotton. And forget about eating solid food for a bit. It doesn't take long at all. Don't be worried, go in with a good attitude and just know that it will all be over in a couple of days(the swelling and pain that is, if you even get the two). Just go home, sleep, and take the pain meds. Good luck!
Reply:Hi there, so sorry you are going through this but don't worry. I had all four removed 20 years ago, same situation. I didn't feel a thing, I was awake but just didn't care (from the the medicine). And I guess there is a lot of pain afterwards but I took Vicodin and was knocked out for about 2 days and don't remember much about it! I had to interrupt a vacation at the beach when mine happened, drove home from Florida to Arkansas by myself in extreme pain, so I was just ready to get those teeth out! Best of luck to you and trust your dentist, he will take good care of you.
Reply:Thru all the answers, i feel most of you were so easy going when removing the wisdom teeth.

CAN the 4 impacted teeth be taken out at the SAME TIME? It's so nice!

Last year, i went to SGH (Dental Center) for only 2 lower impacted teeth, but Dentist refused to remove 2 at once for me, he required to extract one first, then few weeks later come again for 2nd surgery removing 2nd tooth.

It was painful u know, i'd like to be done at once, so that i got pain at once, can take leave at once from work, but the dentist did not agree to do so. He said it's so dangerous for me to do 2 at once. Why???

I see many of you can do even 4 at once, why i could not be done so???

And it's cost a lot for me each time, consultation about $200, then surgery $960 + %26lt;$100 for medication. Totally ardy cost me %26gt;$1,200 for ONLY 1 wisdom extraction.

Thus, after removed one (below, right) and did not come again for the second tooth removal, even though i have actually another 3 impact teeth to go.

If i do so, it will cost me about $5K for all my four teeth ext action. Sign.... so much for me, thus i still can't do until now (still 3 left)
Reply:I had all 4 of mine taken out a number of years ago, they did general anestesia because they were so embedded in the bone it was a lot of chiseling, (at least they didn't have to blast!). I was totally out (I don't know how long the actual process took, it began on a Saturday morning, and I didn't wake up untill well into the afternoon!) The waking up process was not like getting up from sleeping where you are essentially alert and functioning in few seconds it was very gradual return to consciousness (it wasn't unpleasant or anything, I just remember being sort of awake hearing people, but just too tired to open my eyes or move for quite a while). Afterwards I had places where the gums were stitched and needed to keep an ice bag on my cheeks the first day or so (at their recomendation). I think I missed 1 or 2 days of school. I had to stick to a soft diet for several days after. There was some swelling (I looked like a chipmunk for a couple of days) and some acheyness/pain but it was like mostly dull and annoying. They gave me a bottle of pills for the pain, I don't remember what it was; just that it was something with "street value"; I only needed a couple of them, and, no, I didn't sell the rest!

Since they are not putting you totally under I suspect your wisdom teeth are not as embedded as mine were, or maybe they have developed better ways of getting them out. I don't think you will feel any pain during the process, just the pressure of hands with tools in them wedged in your mouth. You might feel them pulling on the teeth. There should be no need to worry about it this, it is a very common procedure; they will have had numerous other people to"practise on" before you!
