I am having all 4 wisdom teeth extracted under general anaesthetic, what will this be like?

I have been told it will take 2-3 weeks to recover by my surgeon but from speaking to friends/colleagues who have had wisdom teeth extracted this seems like a long time.

The surgeon explained that she will need to cut the gums, remove bone, take thetop of each tooth off, remove more bone and then extract the roots individually as I have a nerve running close by to some of the teeth, also each tooth is impacted differently (they are all pointing in different directions)

Does anyone have any experience of this procedure?

I had this done 30 years ago. At the time I had a two year old toddler, and consultant wouldn't do all at once unless husband (to his chagrin!) had a week off to look after me.

I was off work for 10 days, but I know people who have had 3 weeks. Wusses!

Your mouth will be sore, and it is likely your food will have to be liquidised for a few days. You will be swollen and bruised, and it is not likely you will be able to open your mouth much. You won't be allowed to eat for a while before the op, so when you come round you will be sleepy and hungry. The sooner you can manage to eat, the better you will feel. The hospital made me laugh the next morning when they brought breakfast. Cornflakes! Crispy, crunchy cornflakes. My mouth in that condition! I let them go soggy, and then ate them.

When I came round, it wasn't as painful as I expected. Childbirth was much worse! It gets a bit worse later when the swelling and bruises come up, but they give you painkillers, and it is more of an ache than a sharp pain.

They always tell you that nerve story to protect themselves if anything goes wrong says my dentist. Since my wisdom teeth extraction, I have had several teeth out in hospital at different times (I am a diabetic prone to tooth root infections, and my dentist won't touch me now). You always hear about that nerve.

Good luck with the op, I am sure it will go well, and won't be as bad as you are expecting.
Reply:I had two removed (top and bottom same side) under general anasthaetic. It took about an hour all told and I walked home with a friend helping me-we were students. I think I spent a couple of days in bed then quickly got back to normal. Do listen to your orthodontist though and take things easy if you need to

Reply:I had all my wisdom teeth extracted seven years ago. I had the same procedure performed on me and I survived. I followed the after care instructions and I was fine the next day. Once the general anesthetic wears off you will feel some pain but you'll be fine especially since you will be given pain medication. My jaw and did hurt and so did the area that was operated on but I lived through it. I even attended many parties and everyone was able to understand me. One thing that I do advise you to do is rinse with salt water like the doctor will advise you because one of my friends did not and she had a problem with food getting stuck in the existing holes that the wisdom teeth remained. I wouldn't worry myself about it too much if I were you. Remember everyone is different! Some people don't suffer and some do. However, others do- swelling or bruising. But I didn't! Also remember to have a positive attitude and all will go well. :) Good Luck!
Reply:I had all 4 of mine removed at once. I should have gotten them removed at 13 but i got them removed at 23. It was really scary to me as I had never even had a filling! I went into the office, they gave me this gas stuff that made me giggle and they gave me an IV that put me to sleep. It felt like 1minute later I woke up. I had gauze packed in both sides of my face and it tasted pretty gross. I sat in a dim room and a little bit later went home with a big bottle of pain pills. I wasn't in much pain that day but I was pretty hungry!! Well in the next few days it got more and more painful. Turns out that only about 2% of people have these weird muscle spasms. I couldn't open my jaw wide enough to stick in a straw! I got more pills, tried to stretch my jaw as much as I could every day and about a month later I was all better. I still have these holes in the back of my mouth though. In the end, I have less migraines and less pressure on my other teeth (the wisdom teeth were growing under the gum pushing foward) which is all well worth it! I would do it again in a minute! Just make sure you have a variety of good soups and lots of pain pills!
