Wisdom teeth with jawbone removal?

I'm having my wisdom teeth taken out in a little over a week. All four are impacted, but for the bottom two, they will have to cut part of the jawbone out around them. They told me that I should expect more swelling than normal, but wouldn't be specific. Has anyone had any experience with this? How long should I expect to be away from work?

Also, this will be the first time I've been under general anesthesia or had an IV, and I'm a bit nervous. I don't generally mind needles (I'm a blood donor and have had around 20 shots in the past couple of years for traveling.) but I've heard that IVs are more painful than most needles. The whole being unconcious and then woosy thing makes me nervous, too. :(

Wisdom teeth with jawbone removal?
I had my wisdom teeth out a little over a month ago and also had some of my jawbone removed. The doctor told me I should expect to miss 3 days from work but I ended up missing 2 weeks. After my wisdom teeth were removed my face was very swollen I could barely talk and I also experienced headaches that were pretty intense. I would expect to be off for at least a week and get plenty of rest! To much activity will make the swelling worse. Good luck and I hope everything goes well!!!
Reply:I just had my bottom two taken out a couple weeks ago. Both were impacted so they had to cut into my gums. I don't think they had to cut my jawbone though, but if they are doing that, you probably will have more swelling. I had really bad swelling the second day and one side was more swollen that the other. Mine lasted for about 6 days! And even now, the right is still a bit swollen. They say that if you use ice packs on and off the cheeks for the first 24 hours, it will keep swelling to a minimum, but that didn't work for me. But everyone is different so you may get lucky and not have any swelling. I was in pain 24 hours a day for over a week and that is no lie. They gave me Motrin and Vicodin and the Vicodin wasn't working. The Motrin worked but it wore off too quickly. It was my first time with general anesthesia also and I was scared to death, but there is no reason to be. I DO mind needles, but I barely felt the needle for the IV because they gave me nitrous oxide (laughing gas) first to relax me and then they stuck the needle in and I just felt a tiny prick and then I was alseep just like that. I don't even remember what happened because the next thing I remembered was my friend walking me back to my apartment! So you definitely want the general anesthesia. I'm sure you will be fine. I just have zero tolerance for pain!
Reply:have you seen your xrays are your wisdom teeth coming in at an angel, I would get a second opinion. reason; most people that get wisdom teeth taken out get some form of TMJ, mild to moderate to severe. taking out the wisdom teeth might be whats needed but mention to oral surgeon about cracking and popping your jaw since it will be in the wide open position fro so long, alot of people show signs of neck and jaw problems within a 6 to 12 months after having teeth out.

you will be out more than 3 days I think dr was painting a pretty picture, but going under is not that bad.

you might search on web for more info on this and TMJ
