Wisdom teeth removal tomorrow morning?

Tomorrow morning, at 8, I am getting all four of my wisdom teeth removed. I have been prescribed Valium to take about half an hour prior to the procedure. My wisdom teeth still have not erupted, by the way. My uppers are growing in fine; nice and straight. However, my lowers are impacted. The oral surgeon still recommends taking out all 4. Anyway... does anyone have any advice at all for me? What to expect? Pain? How long will the pain last, if there is any? Any advice AT ALL will be helpful.

Wisdom teeth removal tomorrow morning?
i had mine taken out a few years ago, 2005 i think, had to get them out befor i could get braces, the whole procedure didnt take long at all like 30-45 minutes, they put me to sleep for it , i really didnt need any painkillers at first, your mouth will be reallly swollen, i really dont remember any pain after the first day, u probably want to eat mostly soft foods at first, a good reason to eat alot of ice cream and not fell guilty, so yeah your mouth well be swollen at first and goes away within a week, u will bleed alot the first day, have some guaze in your mouth and you'll be alright.
Reply:He should have offered you moderate sedation. This is an IV therapy with fentanyl(pain med) and Versed(amnesia/anxiety reducer) Hopefully he gave you 10mg of Valium to take before the procedure. Ask if you can breath some "gas" as this relieves anxiety and elevates your mood. Plan on 24-48 hrs of discomfort. Eat soft foods, sherberts, and use a ice pack. Motrin also helps greatly with pain and swelling. Take your pain meds every 4-6 hrs the first 24 hrs. Dont get behind on pain meds!
Reply:You will be useless for 24-48 hours. You may not notice much pain, but the Vicodin will make you loopy. And one of the major side effect is nausea. The combination of the Vicodin, lack of food, and drainage can cause you to vomit. Be careful not to pull the stitches though!
Reply:You'll be sore afterward, but not really in serious pain. Stick with soft foods afterward, and follow your surgeon's instructions. NO drinking from a straw - dislodged clots can lead to a dry socket, and that DOES hurt. No smoking; no carbonated drinks (dislodged clots again, as well as blood vessel constriction). Definitely use the pain meds you receive; it's been shown that people in pain heal slower. Rinse your mouth the way your surgeon instructs as well; he/she may give you a prescription rinse, or may simply have you rinse with warm, salty water. Before you know it, you'll be healed up (the mouth heals VERY fast), and you'll never have to worry about those teeth again.

By the way - if you have ANY sort of heart condition and you are not on antibiotics, call your oral surgeon NOW; endocarditis is NOT fun.
Reply:My daughter had 4 impacted wisdom teeth take out last Thursday. It was supposed to take 45 minutes but it took twice as long. She came out surprising good. Yes she had some pain and discomfort. Make sure you put ice on your cheeks as soon as you get home to take down the swelling.Make sure he or she gives you scripts for pain and an antibiotic. She had some bruising but nothing major. They put her in a twilight sleep when they did it.Eat soft foods and call your dentist if you don't stop bleeding. My daughter has a low threshold for pain and it didn't seem to bother her that much.It will take awhile for the swelling to go down.Of course everyone is different but I'm sure you'll be fine.
Reply:You shouldn't feel anything during the removal. If you do, ask for more novacain. I suggest you take Ibuprophen along with the Valium, but call the oral surgeon and ask for his/her opinion before you do it. When I had mine out, all I took was 800mg of Ibuprophen every 8 hours and I was fine. It will reduce the swelling which will reduce or eliminate the pain. Even if you do experience pain, it shouldn't last more than a couple of days.

Some suggestions that your oral sugeon should tell you about:

1. Don't suck on anything - candy, drink through a straw, smoke cigarettes....

2. Keep your mouth clean. Brush your teeth and rinse with mouthwash after every meal and snack for the next few days. That will help to prevent infection.

3. Be careful eating to make sure no food gets stuck in your gums.

My suggestions may seem like overkill to some, but since I had an infection after having my wisdom teeth removed, I think these precautions are appropriate.
