Wisdom Teeth Extraction - Pain And Stuff?

I had my bottom two wisdom teeth removed on 4/13/07. It is now 4/18/07. They were severely impacted. I have been in terrible pain since day 2. The swelling is going down VERY slowly, but the pain is constant. I also have this disgusting, raw-meat taste on the back on my tongue constantly. Is all this pain and this nasty taste normal? I'm on an antibiotic, and also have a prescription mouthwash, so I doubt I have an infection. Any words of wisdom? Thanks.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction - Pain And Stuff?
yes it is completly normal. The swelling will take time to go, and when it does everything will be fine. take care of urself and be strong. The pain will hopefully go in no time.
Reply:Yes, wisdom teeth removal is fun.
Reply:Yes, it is normal. Patience is the key. Continue taking the meds (painkillers included) and wait.
Reply:that sounds like a perfectly normal recovery. some people are really sensitive to that type of trauma, especially if it was a very difficult extraction. mine was easy, but I had two days like you describe...my little sister had problems for two weeks. the raw meat taste is just your own blood and pus in your mouth...that part of the normal healing process...

Just keep doing everything you should, and you'll be fine. ^_^
Reply:all normal- but try a saline rinse in your mouth. That and I have ALWAYS defied what the doictor says and gargled with listerine. The antibiotic will also make your mouth taste funny and make you feel weak. try to eat healthful soft food- some hearty soups especially- just wait until they have "cooled down".
Reply:If you still have a lot of pain then I would go back and have the Dentist check you for air pockets, they can be very painful. Air pockets occur when there is a hole, air gets trapped in there and skin from healing covers it. This may not be an issue for you, but I had all four of mine done at the same time and I was out of pain with in 2 days. But understand everyone is different. As far as the taste goes it will go away, I know is sucks! Try brushing the back of your tongue when you brush your teeth, this may help. Hope you feel better soon! Everything your experiencing is normal, so don't worry! :O)
Reply:try ice packs on your jaw....use for 10 minutes every hour. if your dentist did not prescribe a painkiller, you might call and ask for one...or if he/she did, ask for a stronger one.
Reply:I had all four taken out at one time. The pain is expected.

Holes are expected. It is an open wound in your mouth and thats the taste (blood) . Keep rinsing and taking you antibiotics
Reply:Dude, you have got dry sockets! I got my lower wisdom teeth out last summer and I got dry sockets too, and it was the worst pain I've ever been in in my whole life. Also, I know exactly what that taste is that you're talking about- I had that too. On the bright side, I lost like 10 pounds because the taste and pain made me nauseated and I couldn't chew or eat anyway, but it still sucked. The worst thing is, there's really nothing anybody can do for dry sockets. If you go to your dentist, he'll just pack the holes full of these awful tasting medicated gauze strips that taste like cloves, and then you'll want to puke for sure. The only thing you can do is keep ice packs on your cheeks, suck down all the Vicodin they let you have, and wait. It's been like 5 days for you though, so I'm sure the worst is over now. It's really weird, all of a sudden the pain just stops, just like that. Good luck!
