What should I do if my pain meds due to wisdom teeth arnt wrking?

I was told my pain is due to both bottom wisdom teeth growing in wrong way and are impacted. On one side I am in alot of pain. My dentist gave me a script for tylenol w codene and At night I can't even sleep more than two hours without massive pain!! He told me I have to have them removed by a oral surgeon. I couldnt even get a consult for a week. Also he said that there will be some bone removal and possible risck for me to have nerve damage! What dose that mean? And sense this way of taking them out is so much more intense than just being able to have them pulled by my dentist how long will it take to heal and how much more painful will this type of removal be? Will they be giving me smething stronger after surgery at least? I know It's alot to ask but someone please help!!!!!~thank you

If your in that much pain, from your wisdom teeth, it's probably due to an infection. The first line of defense that your dentist should have given you is an antiboitic. Most dentists prescribe this before they will extract your teeth. As far as pain killers are concerned, T3, is something a dentist will precribe, first, call and let them know that it isn't touching the pain, and request a stronger pain killer.
Reply:Start with calling your dentist in the morning an explaining the pain level you are experiencing. They may change your prescription.

A word of advice. As soon as this ordeal is over get rid of your pain medication. Addictions can form to this stuff.
Reply:Perhaps you should see your dentist again. If infection has set in then the pain meds may not help and you will need a antibiotic. Or if it is not infected you may be able to get them to give you something else.

As for the surgery it's painful but not a big deal. I had all four of my wisdom teeth cut out a few months ago. Two of mine had to have bone removal and they were not anymore painful than the other two. It just took a bit longer for tissue to grow and fill the gum in.

It took me about 2wks to fully recover from the surgery. But I ended up with a bad infection in two teeth that prolonged the healing and pain.

There is a small risk of nerve damage anytime wisdom teeth are removed. It's rare and not likely to cause any problems even if there is damage. Your surgeon can tell you best how much risk there is in your case.

I was given tylox after the surgery and antibiotics. Make sure you have lots of super soft foods like broth and jello and a good heating pad.
Reply:well fisrt! you need to also be taking an over the counter pain reliver with your script, this will give your RX a turbo boost and work a little better. to help you sleep you may want to try a a sleep aid along with this combination of medications. second, wisdom teeth hurt so much when they are growing in because it is a tooths normal pattern to move forward, before wisdom teeth fully erupt they do this up and down motion in your gums much like push ups. this is what causes the pain. this is because while bone is being moved and/or disolved to allow the teeth to be suppoted but still move they have a certain mobility. i wouldnt worry about nerve damage to anything, the only nerves that will be effected by your oral surgery are your scaredy cat nerves. if this procedure is as intense as your DDS makes it out to be you will be knocked out and they will give you tons of meds to make you comfortable. need not worry, these people are professionals and this is not the first time anyone has seen a case like this. you will be just fine, i promise
Reply:as for the pain, i would continue taking the meds as prescribed by your dentist. if the tylenol 3 isn't working, you should contact your dentist and ask if there is something stronger.

anytime that you have oral surgery, there are always risks. these include pain, swelling, bleeding, dry socket (when the clot in the socket is dislodged) and temporary or permanent nerve damage which includes numbness or tingling of the lip, tongue, chin or cheek. it doesn't happen very often.

you may want to have IV sedation (i did). this is when they put you under with IV medications and you have little or no memory of the visit. you will need an escort to and from this appointment.

expect to heal for at least a month or 6 weeks. you may have some sutures that you will need to have removed a week after your appointment.

i hope i helped!
Reply:No! Do not take over-the-counter Tylenol along with your Tylenol w/ Codeine! Tylenol is INCLUDED in your prescription. Just a very little overdose of Tylenol can KILL your liver cells and kill you. Most people think Tylenol is innocuous, but it's not!!

Perhaps your extreme amount of pain is due to food getting trapped under the flap that covers your impacted tooth. Try a water pik or irrigation or swishing with warm salt water to try to free the food. But yes, you should contact your dentist ASAP %26amp; explain your problem. As for the surgery: follow your post-op instructions to the letter and use the ice packs. Do nothing to dislodge the blood clot from the tooth socket and you'll be fine.

Reply:they will give u narcotics, either vicodin or percocet.. those drugs take away all the pain lol and make u sleepy so ull feel good... i had mine out last week and they knocked me out. what they do is, they slice open ur gum. saw away some of the bone there to get to ur tooth, cut the tooth in pieces so it can come out and easy then sew u back up using sutures that come out themselves 7-10 days later... the bottom teeth is where the nerve is. they do hit when they take it out, thats just natural so the first day u cant feel ur bottom jaw due to the nerve and the numbing shots they give u... my surgeon told me it can numb for days months or permanently but its less then a 10% chance that itll be permanent or even months or days, usually next day numbess is gone... but the pain wont be bad unless u dont take the narcotics! so be sure to take them! trust u want them out and its not as bad as u think, i was scared to death, i actually went in crying but its not bad... oh yeah and ull feel fine after like 2-4 days but just dont eat anything hard and dont use a straw or ull get dry socket which is the worst pain ull ever feel! worse then what ur feeling now times a thousand. trust me! so take care of urself...
