Wisdom teeth removal?

my dentist says i should get my wisdom teeth removed soon, and im getting really scared.

he says it would be best to get them all out at once, because all four are impacted. i'm also only 14, so they haven't even erupted yet ! the part that bothers me the most is i'll be awake through the whole thing. i know that i'll have anesthesia, but i'm still nervous.

what i want to know is, am i allowed to take a sleeping pill or something before the operation? how much does it hurt, during and after? and, are there any dangerous side-effects that could happen?

Wisdom teeth removal?
I just got mine out a little over a year ago, all 4 at the same time. they werent giving me any problems, but my dentist suggested I get them out as well.

Anesthesia is GREAT! I was kinda nervous when they put me on the IV anethesia drip.. I was watching the stuff drip in to my veins and i was like "its not working!" and then a second later I said "oh wait..." and them BAM i was out! Next thing I know I was waking up, it was all over!

They will give you pain medication after the surgery, and you'll be good to go, seriously! It was a decent experience for me, considering i am the biggest baby when it comes to pain. The only thing that was the worst for me was I did experience longer jaw pain than I wanted... thats it!

Good luck, its not as bad as it seems!
Reply:If you can not handle having this procedure done under local anaesthetic alone, you need to speak to your dentist about this. Perhaps he offers options, perhaps he doesn't. You will need to consider having them removed under conscious sedation (nitrous oxide or valium IV) to being unconscious (general anaesthesia).

I always tell patients only they know how comfortable or uncomfortable they will be, so you need to tell your dentist your concerns.
Reply:Are you sure you will be awake for that, when I got mine out I was asleep for it.
Reply:I'm not sure why your dentist is having you awake for the procedure-especially seeing as the teeth are impacted. You do not need to worry though, I have had mine out and honestly it did not hurt at all. Your cheeks will be a little swollen and maybe bruised for like a week, but the dentists give you WONDERFUL medicine that takes the pain away.

My advice is to not take a sleeping pill....depending on the anesthesia this could be a very bad combination of medicines. The anesthesia will make it so you don't feel anything during the operation. If you are awake, you may hear them working but you will not feel a thing!

You could get some bleeding after the operation during the healing process, and sometimes that can cause a problem. But, if you follow the take home instructions from the dentist--this risk could decrease dramatically.

All I can say is don't worry, you will be fine!! This is a very standard procedure and many people have had it done!

Good luck!

If you have questions about it hurting and taking your sleeping pill, your dentist would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have -- that's why they're getting paid!! I suggest that you call them :)
Reply:My kids all got the drip, one loved it, the other said no problem, he was on the phone as soon as we left the office. All numb and all. The other hated it. So hopefully it will be ok for you. Oral surgeon is best I think, and medical insurance can cover part of it. I'm sure your parents know this already though. If you listen to TV everything has side effects...life has side effects. No sleeping pills unless the doctor gives them to you, it can cause a reaction with the medicine they give you. (bad stuff) Good luck with it all.
Reply:Honey,,,dont take any meds before hand without the doc knowing. I have been in the dental field,, ( wisdom teeth) for over 20 years. Ask your doc if he can prescribe you any anti-anxiety meds before your surgery. Do you have the option to go to sleep for this ? If so,,for Gods sake,,do not eat or drink anything for 8 hours prior to surgery,,,,,nothing after midnight.

Does your doc have nitrous -oxide ( laughing gas) ?However,,,your doc should be able to give you something.

After wards... you will be totally numb,,and you will have to bite on gauze for up to 45 mins. The pressure of bite will make the oozing of the blood to a min. Do not rinse with anything that day,,,soft foods,,,lots of liquids. The next day, rinse with salt water after every meal. That promotes healing. Continue to brush your teeth,,just not in those areas. You will be sore, but it wont be anything you cant handle. Have mom get you some IBUPROFEN. The helps with the muscles relaxations.

You will be fine honey. You are 14 and it is time to get them out, the old you are the harder of a time you have. KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLEAN :) w/b let me know how you did,,,good luck
Reply:Okay, I got mine done about 6 months ago. I was scared too. The reason they don't want to put you to sleep is b/c there can be more complications. I also was anestesitized. None of my 4 wisdom teeth had erupted either. No, you shouldn't take any drugs before an operation, unless the doctor tells you to. The drugs can cause more complicatiions. When you first get the needle in, it hurts(cause its a needle) but about 10 seconds after that, I 'woke' up. It was like time was gone. I won't lie to you. It hurts alotwhen you wake up. When I 'woke up', I had to put gauze in my mouth to stop the bleeding, and I had to take drugs to stop the pain. YOu'll be really sleepy after its done, let yourself doze! Don't eat anything that takes too much effort. What really helped me were ice packs. put them anywhere it hurts to help the pain. For me, it took a couple of weeks before the pain yent away, and my face swelled up. Don't be planning to go to school for at least a few days-it depends on how you feel. Talk to your doctor about any side effects. Good luck!!!!!
Reply:Its VERY good to get them out. They cause alot of problems later in life if you dont get them out. Most dentist will put you to sleep if you tell them you are nervous. Some general dentist dont have the equipment to do so though. If your dentist does not, talk to them about going to a oral surgeon.

I would not take a sleeping pill or any pain killer for that matter. A lot of them will make your blood thinner and harder for the dentist. It does not hurt that much. Your dentist will give you pain meds to take after.

Main thing you need to do is relax. Your dentist knows what he's doing. : )
Reply:I had mine out when I was 15. Ask to go to an Oral Surgeon instead of a dentist. They can put you out for the procedure. You do not want to take a sleeping pill or anything before the process, that will mess with the anesthesia that they are giving you. You'll be a bit uncomfortable after. They should give you pain meds after. I suggest sleeping in a recliner instead of a bed for a couple of days after. Good luck.
Reply:If you go to an oral surgeon they will put you to sleep. I would not personally have this done under local anesthesia (novacaine). I know someone who had an impacted tooth removed under local and it did hurt. Your dentist has to cut through tissue and bone to remove these teeth.

Furthermore, if you go to an oral surgeon it may cost less because it may be covered under medical. A dentist can not bill medical insurance.
