I'm getting my wisdom teeth extracted... What can I expect?

Will there be a lot of pain? When can I eat? How long will it take to heal? Will they give me good drugs? :) How long before the swelling goes down? Whats the ride home going to be like? Will I be black and blue?

My teeth are pretty impacted... I was told by my dentist that they may have a tough time.

I'm getting my wisdom teeth extracted... What can I expect?
Severe pain, you wont feel like eating for a day or two. Dont know about the healing time. It is different for each person when it comes to swelling. You wont be feeling very well on the way home. YES you should get some good drugs to help. Good luck.
Reply:Expect puffy cheeks and lots of pain killers. You'll be doped to the gills for a bit.
Reply:Expect a bad day and good luck friend.
Reply:lots of pain. get some really good meds. you're going to need them.

it'll probably take about a week before you're back to normal.
Reply:Dentist will give you prescription for pain pills, make sure you get them and take them till gone. Should not take but a few days to be okay again.
Reply:pain, and to look like you have down syndrom for couple of days
Reply:I got my bottom wisdom teeth pulled when I was 12. VERY impacted on the bottom. I was not happy for a week. Being a kid I'm sure made it harder too though.

I got my top ones pulled when I was 21. Piece of cake.

Plan on eating lots of soup and Jello. The worst part about it all is not being able to eat what you want. And if you are a smoker, plan on quitting. Smoking will mess you up.

Tell them you are alergic to Vicodin and you may get something better. =) If they are knocking you out completely, expect to sleep a lot and feel reallllly loopy when you are awake. I didn't get bruises from it, but my cheeks were puffy for a week and a half both times.

Good luck.
Reply:very good drugs is what you should expect. no, demand.
Reply:Expect the worst. If you dentist says they are going to have a hard time of it then don't plan on solid food for atleast a week. You may possible be balck and blue but not likely. There will be swelling for the first day or so. Don't coun't on anything stronger than tilanol 3 and don't drive yourself.
Reply:I had all 4 of mine out at the same time, and they were all severely impacted. Right before they put me to sleep the surgeon said well, we can't guarantee you'll get all the feeling in your face back (one set of tooth roots was encircling a major nerve). I think being put to sleep was definitely the right choice, the surgery lasted 2 hours but it felt like 5 seconds to me! Afterward I got my purse and coat, got in the car with my mom and said oh no! wheres my purse, where's my coat?! I was SO out of it. The pain that followed the next week or so was horrible, i was alternating 750mg of vicodin with 1 excedrin migraine every 2 hours which worked pretty well but I am also 180 pounds. There was no bruising, the swelling was more on the inside, and I could eat mushy things the next day. They gave me a little syringey thing to clean the holes out with which was fun, and I have to say in the end it was well worth it because mine had caused me alot of pain before I had them out. Good luck, and don't try going back to work before you're ready I was miserable there!
Reply:a horrible breath and hamster cheeks ha ha the swelling depends on the work they do..i remember going to a disco about 5 days after and every beat of the music just throbbed through my mouth...hope you will be okay its only for a few days and its better than tooth ache
Reply:Everyone reacts differently. I was sick for a week, however, a friend of mine went to the beach the next day! You'll be pretty miserable for the ride home, but the pain meds will help you sleep most of it off. Lots of pureed fruit and mashed vegetables are good to keep your strength up. I didn't get a lot of bruising, and the swelling only lasts a few days. Pain medication will be your best friend, but try to only use them when you really need to. It will speed up your recovery and confidence if you don't rely on them. You'll be totally fine!
Reply:I had a bottom impacted tooth taken out with no problems, or pain -nothing. I was off work for 3 days but that was because I could - I was alright to go back the next day. The worst was coming round from the aneasthetic where I wanted to strangle the dentist
Reply:Expect to get drugs.Laughing gas is good.Have someone drive u home though your doctor may say you will be fine.Bite hard on cotton for the rest of the day.Face will be swollen. You will talk funny. No sipping hot liquids or smoking.Swelling goes in about 6hours.After 24hrs you will survive.
Reply:This is the information I got yesterday when I had 2 teeth pulled out.

Extraction After Care

keep biting on the gauze pad for at least 20 mins If bleeding persists take a fresh pad and bite on it for another 15 mins.

Careful not to bite your lip as it may be numb. Do Not rinse for 12 hrs. After that gently rinse with warm salt water repeat 4 hourly if needed.

For the first 24 hrs No smoking or consuming alcohol

Nothing too hot or cold to drink only eat soft foods eg:Mashed potato and gravy

No undertaking of any strenuous activity. Sleep on a raised pillow and you can take a paracetamol for pain. Contact us if bleeding persists or if there is severe swelling. I have large roots and I also have troubles with it but mostly for that day I am fine today
Reply:Just think of it this way, if you were looking to start a diet to lose weight, now is the perfect time to start! You won't be eating much other than soup, jello, and ice cream. Unless you're interested in baby food.... didn't think so.
