What is wisdom teeth removal of 4 teeth like?

So I need some input and experiences here, please. This coming Wednesday I am going to get my wisdom teeth removed. ALL four of them. And all but one are impacted. One has grown out the side of my gum on my upper left side. So I am guessing this is going to be painful. I am assuming they are going to put me under, I hope at least. I am wondering though about recovery, pain, etc. Have any of you been through this? Where you've gotten at least two taken out? And how did it feel? What was the process like? And how about being put under? Ive never had any type of surgery. So that means Ive never been put under.

I am currently taking Vicodin due to a slipped disk in my back so I know I should inform the DR of this. But what will he do about the after pain? I am just so nervous so any advice, experience or input would be nice. Thank you.

You'll no doubt be under if your teeth are impacted because this requires cutting through your jaw bone. Mention it to your dentist beforehand to make sure.

You will not go through any pain during the procedure, obviously. Healing isn't too bad, actually. It's not pleasant, and make sure you take a few days off work/school to recover (going back too soon can prolong the healing time).

I got all four of mine taken out last week. Two of them were surgical extractions, but I was awake for it, because they had broken the gumline. The exraction itself was fine. The first day of recovery was not too painful and there was not too much swelling. I had soup and juices and followed my dentist's directions to the letter, including using an icepack. Apparently most of the patients who have complications are those who do not follow the instructions properly.

Your dentist will probably prescribe two pain meds. I was prescribed ibuprofen to take every 8 hours and percocet to take as needed... needless to say, I did use them all within the first two and a half days (only 10 pills though). Once they were gone, I was still having a lot of pain in one of my sockets (the worst extraction), so I took Extra Strength advil every 8 hours and the Ibuprofen every 8 hours (alternating).

There was some pain, but nothing unbearable.

The worst thing that can happen is a dry socket... which is when the blood clot that forms in the socket becomes dislodged, and exposes the nerve. Your dentist should provide you with Do's and Don'ts to avoid this, but here is what I've learned from my research online:

Do not drink pop (the bubbles can dislodge the clot)

Do not suck or drink through a straw

Do not spit

Do not mess around with the sockets

If you do get a dry socket, the pain will be severe and the pain meds will not help. The pain is described as being severe and throbbing, and starts 3-4 days after surgery. If you get this, go to your dentist, who will put a dressing on the socket to reduce the pain. It goes away in about a week.

Anyway - no one will tell you that wisdom tooth extraction is fun, but it's really not so bad. Following your dentist's instructions, you can avoid severe pain (take your meds on time), a lot of swelling (use ice for the first day, then moist heat), and dry socket.
Reply:I've got to get 4 pulled as well. 2 are impacted. One is growing in sideways.

People I've talked to who have had this stuff done say it hurts for about a week. There's no eating real food for the first few days. No brushing, no drinking through straws either. Like all things, it'll heal and be a distant memory.
Reply:ok..i was so scared when i had to get my wisdom teeth out, i even had sleep apnea over it..anyways the day came and when u go in my doctor was prettty quick, put me under..they put an iv into your forearm and put u to sleep..out like a lite in like 15 seconds..anyways both my bottom were impacted top two rotted..out in 20 minutes..i felt no pain the first couple days cuz i slept alot, but then when i started to get up and about it started to kinda ache alittle, i couldnt close my mouth all the way ..make sure u have plenty of gauze..make them give u extra, cuz when u start to finally rinse and change gauze, u run out pretty fast..i ran into that and i cried cuz the gauze acts like a cushion..no worries..its easier than u think you dont feel the stitches..they fall out on thier own..it hurts, but it not that bad..im a wussy girl, and i did fine, just remeber to ask for extra gauze
Reply:this hurts like hell i had them all taken out couldn't eat real food for over a week. it hurt so much i couldn't open my mouth it go swollen like hell i almost couldnt take the pain it hurts where they stich you
Reply:I had mine removed years ago and I was not put completely under. That was great, I was just kinda floating in and out of it and it didn't hurt at all. When the Doc was hammering and chiseling out the impacted teeth it felt weird; but didn't hurt! The best part is that since I was never put completely under, I didn't have to spend the night in a hospital. The bad part is the packing and repacking. Not being able to eat solid food for a week in no fun either! Good luck!
Reply:I had 2 taken out last thursday. They put me to sleep. It was my first time for all of that as well. I didn't have any problems with any of it. Just a little swollen a few days after. they gave me percicet?? and 600mg IB and that definitely did the trick. 4 will be tough, i cant imagine!! You will just be more sore, thats all. Good luck!
