Exactly one week ago I had pretty rough wisdom teeth extraction (all 4 at once) - do I have a drug problem?

When I had my wisdom teeth extracted last week (exactly 7 days ago), it was a pretty gruesome affair. The first thing that freaked me out was when I was notified 5 minutes prior to the surgery that it would only take 15-20 minutes. That's 5 minutes a yank! After the surgery 3 out of 4 seemed normal holes and generally OK, but my lower left was massive, cut sloppily (jaggedly) and hurt more than the others when the novacaine wore off. It was the deepest, the most impacted, the most difficult to remove, I get that, but my jawbone was exposed and it HURT. It healed over by day 4 but is still a tricky painful hole, bigger than the others no matter the rate of healing. My question is about my drugs. They prescribed Tylenol 3 but no effect. They represcribed Vicodin and this works well, but I am going in for a checkup tomorrow (Day 8) and will need a SECOND refill! Will they think I am abusing this medication, I genuinely have sore jaw pain. Each bottle is only 20. Is this normal? Thanks!!!

The dentist probably wont think you have a "problem" due to the difficult extraction you describe, but do expect him to start weaning you off the meds...you may only get one more refill, esoecially since the site is healing. All that you describe is normal.
Reply:No, you just need to tell them how freaking bad it hurts. I had to call my dr. crying because I was in so much pain. Whatever they had given me made me loopy but did not take away the pain. The vicodin worked very well. Just ask them what the hell happened to your jaw and please can I have more pills. Good luck!!
Reply:Tell them the pain you are in, and explain your situation. if that doesnt work, make yourself bleed and spit blood out so they can see it, that should do it.
Reply:Are you taking the meds for any other reason than your jaw REALLY hurts? Are you taking them because they help you sleep or because you like the way they make you feel? Are you taking them more often than prescribed? It sounds from what you write that you are not. So, I don't think you have a drug problem. You do have to expect that he will start trying to ween you off the pain meds, though. Be prepared.

My dad, who turned 80 last month, had a knee replacement at the end of August. It still hurts him some. When I called his doctor to get one refill, only 3 weeks after the surgery, the doctor told me that he needed to come done a step from Percaset to Vicodin. He was still in a lot of pain and had already tried not using the meds often, but he couldn't sleep. Luckily, he had some Percaset left over from his hand surgery months before this and we used that, but we used it sparingly.

First, you have to tell the dentist just how horrible the pain is, especially, I'm assuming, at night. Second, if a knee replacement isn't getting a second refill of the pain meds, you know the dentist isn't going to give you a third. Good luck! I hope it starts getting better soon---REAL soon.
Reply:that is normal. Take it until it isn't excruciating. if you cannot fall asleep comfortably because of the pain, then continue to take the meds. Just remember, when the pain is gone, if you are feeling like you still want the meds, you hafta tell yourself that you don't really need them . Sometimes they can be addictive, and it depends on the person. I can take stuff but then not take it if I don't feel like it. I don't really have an addictive personality.

Pah! 20 pills! I'd need 2 refills too!!
Reply:It shouldn't be hurting that bad after seven days. I had my wisdom teeth taken out last year, two were impacted. The pain was not that bad after a seven days. I would check and see if maybe you have dry socket. I honestly believe you do have that much pain, but it is never really healthy to take pain killers for an extended period of time.
