IV Sedation Wisdom Teeth question Help!?

Okay so i haveto get all four wisdom teeth out I am EXTREMELY nervous about it there commming out on Friday, I think at least one or more are impacted, Im not quite sure though. Seeing i am extremely nervous and also have a phobia to dentistry, I opted for IV sedation and my orial surgeon also gave me a Valium to take the night before and the morning of. The question i have is i have been researching other peopls posts here about IV sedation, and some people say they fell complete asleep remeber nothing and woke up and it felt like the procedure was 5 mins long, while others say that they heard stuff going on in the backround and people talking and what not and were aware of what happened. How come some people fell asleep the whole time and it felt only 5 mins long, while others remebered stuff and heard stuff, Because I want to be like one of the people who fell asleep and heard or felt nothing and the procedure only felt like 5-10 mins, not the person who hears stuff and is aware.

IV Sedation Wisdom Teeth question Help!?
I just had this done this morning. My oral surgeon gave me laughing gas and then proceded to put the IV in. I was loopy from the laughing gas but remember feeling awesome and so relaxed. The IV sedation was amazing. I remember the doctor putting drugs in the IV and then I remember waking up. I am also one of those people that does not like any dental procedures and the sedation was awesome. I remember nothing about the extraction and did not experience any pain.... until I got home. I hope that you are able to fall asleep and remember nothing because that was the easiest procedure ever. They wheeled me out to the car and I barely remember getting home. I was up until the bleeding stopped so I could take the gauze out, then I slept for a couple hours after. Good luck!
Reply:Just make sure you take your Valium the morning of and you will be fine. When I had mine done even after the procedure I still couldn't walk because it was so strong in my system.

I guess everyone is different. If you have a good dentist they will make sure you are fully asleep during the procedure. Don't borrow trouble and don't let anyone scare you. They may have said they heard stuff, but chances are they were dreaming or hallucinating.
Reply:It depends on how "deep" the oral surgeon gets you. Generally, the deeper you are, the more risky it is (though the risk is still very low). Also, the recovery will be longer the deeper you are generally speaking. But if you desire this, let the oral surgeon know and they can take care of you appropriately.
Reply:It just depends on how your body responds to the medication. Explain what you want to your dentist, then he may be able to give you a higher dosage of the sedative, so you don't remember.
Reply:IV consciousness sedation usually involves a drug called Versed given along with a pain medication, like morphine or demerol. Versed has a "retro-amnesia" side effect, where the patient often doesn't remember anything that happened. Some people feel like they've fallen asleep, others have a few foggy memories.

I had Versed for a procedure and once that hit, I didn't remember a thing until I woke up and went home!

IV consciousness sedation is much, much safer than a general anesthesia! No worries, you'll be fine!
Reply:The reason for the variations in people's experience is because anesthesia affects different people differently. You are sedated, which is similar to the first stage of sleep- light. It's not the same as a general anesthesia where you are meant to be out of it entirely. It's just an altered state of awareness, and how much you are aware is influenced by lots of things. In your case, you will have Valium on board, so you should approach things pretty relaxed to start with. When the anesthetic hits, you will more than likely be lights out, and wake up after it's all over with. There is also a chance, if you really work yourself up into a state, that you will not drift off entirely because you won't allow yourself to. You will sort of hover in never-never land, neither truly asleep nor awake fully. Either way is just fine. As to how much you remember, that too is individual. Anytime you mess with a persons state of consciousness, you mess with the memory tapes. There just is no way to predict what, if anything you will remember. Regardless of what that ends up being, what you won't remember is any pain- so the memory shouldn't be disturbing if you have one. Honestly, you shouldn't have any problems with this procedure at all. No matter what happens- if you fall asleep completely, or stay slightly aware, or if you have a clear memory or not- you won't be in any pain and you will do fine. Just don't dwell on it all so much, or you will really work yourself into a tizzy. Just remember, they are teeth you really don't want to keep anyway, and once this is done, it's done. They won't grow back.
Reply:I'm going to answer this 2 ways. First, I've had IV/sedation as a patient. I didn't take any Valium and I remember everything, but didn't care. I wasn't given a lot of medicine because I wasn't very nervous. A 30 min procedure only felt like 5. I heard them talking, but don't really remember about what. Here's your second answer: I work for an oral surgeon, patients like you who are REAL scared usually take a lot more IV meds to relax. The calmer you are, the better it works. Take your Valium, get a good nights sleep and try to stay calm. Remember, we do this all day long. Be honest with your surgeon before the procedure and let them know if you are a wreck, or just a little anxious. Tell them that you would rather be a little more sleepy. All this will help them decide just how to treat you. Good luck!
Reply:I had mine done 2 weeks ago. It seemed like it only took 5 min. I remember talking to the surgeon after he put i IV in and then I don't remember any thing after that, then I was a.wake I felt no pain and don't remember hearing anything. It all took about 30 minutes. You will be fine. I was a nervous reck when I went. But overall was not that bad.
Reply:i had it done last week, and even though there knocking you out you dont go all the way out, you might fill like you hear whats going on, but trust me you wont fill a thing im a denist chicken, but i came out great , no worries.
