I'm hoping that I can call on Tuesday, after the holiday, and then get an appointment to get them out on Wednesday, May 30th. Is this too late? I don't know that I'll be able to get dental work done while I'm in Australia, and the wisdom teeth (especially the top ones) are really impacting and moving my front teeth.
I don't want to have gross swollen cheeks or a bleeding mouth when I get to Australia though, as I'll be seeing my fiance again for the first time in 6 months!
Please advise!
If I am moving to Australia in 8 days (6/4/07), would it be okay to get my wisdom teeth out before I go?
You also don't want to be in an airplane with pressure fluctuations and the possibility of bleeding. Also, we tend to think of this kind of surgery as fairly routine, but, complications do occur, some of them serious. You need to be where you can checked on with follow-ups until the doc says you can travel.
Reply:Maybe you should get your teeth seen to before you move to Australia. There are lots of dental practices around in Australia. You look in the yellow pages.
Reply:Hello,
I doubt you will be able to get an appointment that quick. Usually, it takes weeks to get into an office..
If you are able to get in, and it sounds like you are only concerned about the top ones at this time, you should not have any problems. Usually, the swollen cheeks and teeth where problems arise more often are on the bottom. The top ones usually just feel like a pizza burn for a few days. They should be back to good shape by the time you get there...just don't overdo it.
Reply:After I had all four of my wisdom teeth cut out, yes they were severely impacted, both my cheeks were swollen. I look like I had the bad case of the mumps.
The swollen cheeks will come with the removal of the wisdom teeth. Particularly, if they are as impacted as you say they are. Trust me, I've been there and I know.
It was the best move I could have made. No more severe ear aches.
I just wish that I had those damn things removed from my mouth sooner than the age of 29 1/2.
Reply:Wow, 40 hours eh? It only takes 16-20 hours to get from Columbus, OH to Melbourne, VIC.
There are plenty of dentists here, but you probably want to look at costs. It's quite expensive without insurance. I honestly doubt you'd be able to get an appt with such short notice. I think I had to make mine at least a month in advance, as well as meet with the doc for a consultation/this is what will be done appt.
I would definitely wait. Things could go wrong with the procedure and you could be in a lot of pain which wouldn't be good for the flight. The meds also might make you feel woosy while on the plane. I wouldn't risk it.
Reply:Yes do it here. Having wisdom teeth out doesnt take too long and recovery is pretty quick. I had 5 out (had an extra tooth) so i know how it feels.
Reply:No, you will be refused entry into Australia with no wisdom teeth - it is written into the constitution.
Reply:My mom is a dentist and it takes about a coupple days to be okay with them but about 1 1/2 weeks to be fully recovered. You will still have pain in your mouth though and a lot of discomfort. the discomort and stuff like that is different for everyone. So i suggest not to do it. Hey my brother is in Australia visitinggg..lol
