if it is an impaction, how would it be removed? will they cut the skin? will they cut the jaw bone? can they break the jaw bone? anyone know the step by step procedures? including steps to put you to sleep? i am a severe dental phobic and i was supose to get my wisdom teeth out last week, but i canceled the appointment with the oral surgeon.
When your wisdom teeth are partially erupted and will not come out any farther, is it impacted?
If a wisdom tooth is partially erupted it can sometimes be said that it is impacted. It depends on the position of the tooth. Almost always, an oral surgeon will recommend general anesthesia (being put to sleep), just like in the movies i.e. count back from 10. You don't really want to know the details after that. On occasion they will have to do some cutting. There is always a risk, but it is really rare that a jaw gets broken or paralysis occurs. Your first visit to the oral surgeon is usually a consult only. The OS can answer all of your questions on that visit. In case it helps....top teeth come out pretty easily in general. Bottom teeth are sometimes more difficult. If the tooth doesn't erupt all the way it is not functioning in your bite, furthermore it is prone to gum problems and cavities. Just get it done.
Reply:I think they would just pull them right out mate. Just like that. I think they could put you out cold too..and make sure you wouldn't be awake for the procedure.
Reply:I'd go toe to toe with you on being a dental phobe! I don't think anyone can be worse than me! I did have my wisdom teeth removed though. I went to an oral surgeon [recommended and check and rechecked on them]. He used an I.V. and I was out. Never felt a thing. Afterwards, I was given great drugs that never let me feel a thing and the stitches melted away. All was fine. I wish I could have that guy do the same thing everytime I need a filling! Getting my wisdom teeth removed wasn't even 1/10 of the same as getting fillings.
Reply:When my wisdom teeth had grown in but they didnt break the skin my dentist had to saw open the bone to get to them. I promise you it was not bad. I didnt really remember much of the first day. You are sooooo messed up your first day you dont feel anything I promise you, you will just feel like your stoned out of your mind. I never had ANY pain with my wisdom teeth. There was discomfort but never pain. Just make sure that you have someone wake you up to give you your vicadin or you set an alarm because thats what makes you pain free. Also keep ice on it 24/7. You will be fine. I swear on my life it doesnt hurt.
Reply:If it is partially erupted, look at the direction at which the tooth is coming out. If it is slanted, it is impacted. Since you have an appointment with the oral surgeon, it must be impacted because an oral surgeon usually extract impacted teeth.
They will of course excise the gums, if not how do they remove the tooth? But don't worry, you will be under general anaesthesia which means you won't feel any pain except the pressure. They won't cut the jaw bone, they are trained to extract the tooth only and not the whole jaw. =)
Try to get another appointment with the oral surgeon asap as i believe they are very busy. If you delay anymore, you might get an infection around the gum area called pericoronitis. google it to find out more.
Good Luck. =)
Reply:sometimes your wisdom teeth start to come out and then they go back. They can do that for along time. That is what mine did. Finally when I was about 24 they came out all the way. I had to get them surgically removed. You should make an appt. with a dentist to get them checked..
