I am having all four of my wisdom teeth taken out by an oral surgeon this week; one of the best surgeons around.
All four of my wisdom teeth are impacted, but the bottom two are already half way out (just kind of sideways.)
The surgeon is knocking me out for it, so I should not feel him take them out, right?
About how bad will it hurt after though?
What are the stitches like? Do they dissolve after time?
Do they hurt the inside of your cheek from scratching?
Please don't post anything inappropriate. Thank you.
Wisdom Teeth (I know, there are many like questions.)?
I am in the same situation and will be getting mine out in March. My sister had hers out a while back and had the following advice for me: The week before your surgery, make sure you drink alot of water so your body will be well-hydrated. It will help with healing after surgery. Have ice packs or bags of frozen peas prepared and ready to go because you will need them soon after you get home. Also, get very soft foods to have on hand because you will not be able to chew anything hard. If you try, it's not only painful, but you may rip your stitches. She recommended jello, puddings, apple sauce, mashed potatoes, even baby foods for variety. She told me that also because of the stitches, you cannot have carbonated drinks (sodas). Instead, drink alot of water, juice, etc. Also, she told me NO citrus fruits or juice, because they will burn the heck out of your incisions. She advised me also to take the pain pill prescribed by the doctor as soon as you can after surgery. That way, it will cut the pain off at the pass before it gets a chance to get too bad. It is important to rest: plan on about 7 days total before you are able to really do alot. If you are knocked out, you shouldn't feel anything during sugery. A good surgeon will make sure the stitches are not sticking up enough to poke/scratch your cheek. If you feel poking, let your dentist know right away. Good luck and speedy recovery, friend. Wish me luck, too ;)
Reply:okay i was knocked out for mine too. i was really nervous about the anesthesia not working but it was really no big deal. i was getting really loopy while falling asleep.
the pain didnt hit me til i got home from the surgeon's and while i was waiting for my vicodin prescription to get filled. that waiting period was rough, but once i had a steady amount of pain meds in my system, the pain was barely there!
i kinda did the wrong thing w/ my stitches, about a week after the surgery i kept playing with them and then i pulled them out...which was a huge relief. they didnt hurt my cheek but they were just kind of annoying. the downside of doing that is that more food gets stuck in the holes...but those heal quickly!
Reply:You shouldn't feel a thing during the actual procedure. My surgeon assured me I wouldn't even remember the car ride home. He was right. I was given Vicodin, which really helped manage the pain. The only discomfort was looking like a chipmunk for a couple days.
The stitches dissolved and were completely unnoticeable. The only thing to worry about are "dry sockets" which occurs when you lose the blood clots (part of the healing process) early. But avoid straws or other forms of sucking, as well as hot liquids, and you should be a-okay.
Good luck!!
Reply:I just had mine out a few days ago. I had 6. 4 of them were impacted like most people and the 2 extras are still somewhere buried in my jaw. I guess I might have to get them out in a few years. It really isn't as bad as I anticipated. I told the surgeon that I hated IVs so he gave it to me in my hand and I didn't feel a thing. Then I had some sort of gas going into my nose and slowly fell asleep. I kind of woke up towards the end but it wasn't painful at all just a little weird. I went right back to sleep and then next thing you know you are awake. For me the worst part was trying to eat in order to take the meds when your whole face is numb! Use frozen peas and stay on top of your meds for pain management. Today the pain got a little worse but it isn't too bad...more uncomfortable than painful just relax and make sure you have PLENTY of movies good luck!
Reply:I just had mine out in the middle of June. All 4 of mine were impacted also. Mine didn't even break through at all. Once you're out you won't feel a thing. You'll wake up about a half hour after you get the shot because they go pretty quick with the whole thing. The only pain i felt was the tiny little prick of the needle. I didn't even remember going to sleep. I just remember all of a sudden my eyes closing and that was it. A little after i woke up in the recovery room. Waking up feels a little odd because you just wake up looking at the ceiling and you've got a numb feeling in your mouth because of the novocaine. They will put gauze in your mouth to help soak up the blood from the incisions. After you're home i can pretty much guarantee you'll sleep for at least four or five hours because of the anesthesia. It really doesn't hurt at all. You'll be a little soar for a couple days but just take some advil or something. The doctor did give me a script for Vikadin but i didn't use it or any pain killer afterwards. The stitches aren't bad at all. They just get annoying because you'll get that feeling of something in your mouth that shouldn't be. You'll have to go back to the doctor to have them out but it just takes a second and it's not painful at all. Sorry i wrote so much. I didn't realize i did. Hope i helped.
Reply:My bf just had his wisdom teeth taken out, this is what he told me.
Your out of hospital within the day, its pretty painful, though he didnt take any pain meds till late the next day. It hurts to talk and laugh. Brushing your teeth and using mouth wash is excruciatingly painfull. The stitches disolve so you wont feel anything.
He found it helpful to have ice packs over his cheeks for the pain, his cheek were fairly swollan too.
Good luck, and after about a week you should be fine =)
Reply:I had all 4 teeth removed back in October, the bottom 2 being WAY impacted, wow. Was sedated via IV, and I slept through the entire thing. Didn't feel anything, don't remember anything. It was nice to just sleep through the whole thing and not feel a thing. Afterwards though, when the numbness wore off, that's when it sucks Hurting, bleeding, can't eat cause of the bleeding (at least that's how it was for me). But you should be given some pain medication for the pain (although the vicodin did absolutely nothing for the pain, just helped me to sleep for a few hours).
Stitches, I had dissolvable stitches. They eventually came out on their own (I'm sure I swallowed most of it, ick). I did end up with dry sockets in the bottom holes, so that sucked. Be sure to follow your oral surgeon's aftercare instructions, and just hope you don't get dry sockets. They suck, REALLY suck.
