Does everyone need to have their wisdom teeth removed?

have been putting off going to the dentist...last time they checked my teeth werent impacted...but he said my mouth was probably too small

except now i am constantly biting into my cheek

Does everyone need to have their wisdom teeth removed?
Not everyone has to have them removed, but they most likely will if the dentist sees that they are starting to come in crooked, or if you have a small mouth.

My brother had to have half of his removed due to a small mouth- 2 weeks later I started getting symptoms, and mine would have come in crooked so went to an oral surgeon and was put under and had them all removed.
Reply:not everyone, but most likely 90 percent of all, bc they do get infected and tend to grow out wrong!
Reply:Not everyone needs to have their wisdom teeth removed. Some people can go their whole lives with them. it depends on wether or not you are being bothered by them. Generally, those with smaller mouths will experience more pain, and thus have them removed. It just depends on how it is affecting you. Small mouth, pain.
Reply:Not everyone has to have their wisdom teeth removed but a lot of people do. I need mine removed because like you, they were rub on the inside of my cheek and often this leads to infection. Go to your dentist and get this problem sorted because its a quick and simple operation and it will be much more comfortable and better for you in the long run.
Reply:Not everyone needs to have the wisdom teeth extracted, but if they are bothering you a lot and your dentist suggested your mout might be too small (which could cause your teeth to become crooked), then... well, it's really more about what you are prepared to do rather than what is common. The removal of the teeth won't be as bad if they have broken through the gums; you won't need surgery in this case. It might still be costly though, It's all up to you!
Reply:Everyone doesn't need to have their wisdom teeth removed. Some people do have quite small mouths so wisdom teeth cannot come up properly without causing adult over-crowding. my friend had that and the dentist decided not to remove the wisdom teeth but the one in front of it to allow more room in her mouth - she had to wear braces for a year to correct her teeth, but she has a lovely set now!

Personally I think 3 of my wisdom teeth have come up, and they hurt like hell at first, and I too kept taking chunks out of the inside of my cheek, but that was just because I wasn't used to them being there - but they are fine now! I am lucky enough to have really naturally straight teeth. My childhood friend consoles himself by telling me that this is because I have always had a big mouth!!!

You're best off going to the dentist and seeing what he says - not as if you can really do anything about it yourself, and you could be stressing and worrying about nothing!

How long does one have to wait to eat after having wisdom teeth extracted?

I just had my wisdom teeth, two of which were horizontally impacted, removed on Tuesday the 31st. My surgeon said that because my mouth is small, my swelling is probably worse than most, but he gave me no time frame in which to expect being able to actually EAT again.

I have college band camp starting Sunday the 12th. I already know I can't play, but does anyone think I'll be able to eat by then? Right now my jaw opens so that there's a fingerwidth of distance between my top and bottom teeth. My swelling has almost halved since the first day and I'm taking Ibuprofen, which I heard may help reduce the swelling faster, and occasionally putting an ice pack to my cheeks.

Thanks for any and all responses!

How long does one have to wait to eat after having wisdom teeth extracted?
Hi! I've been in dentistry for over 25 years and yes you can play in the band on the 12th if you do this. Listen carefully. You are talking about 2 weeks so work on this now, it only the 4th.

3-4 times a day rinse with warm very salty rinses, the last one at night for at least 1 minute...gently.

Now how to ice down. BUT do this first. Get your ice pack. Now sit quitely and open your mouth as far as you can, do not stress. Gently massage the area for 5-10 minutes with circular motions with finger pads not tips. Your nails will hurt. Pretend to yawn when you do this. THEN immediately apply ice packs for 20 minutes. Take pain meds or Motrin as needed. Do this 3-4 times a day. Sleep with an extra pillow and don't push or pull anything over 10 pounds. In one week the swelling should be almost totally resolve, then you are okay to play. Remember, eat lost of ice cream and cool and old foods, nothing spicy, pizza, bagels, chewy or sticky for the next 7 days. Now one more thing. Chew sugarless gum for 20 minutes. Ice down. This will lossen the muscles and reduce the swelling even more. You should be back to normal in 10 days. I promise. Marie
Reply:Hi! That is find, just do the ice pack for 10 minutes or wrap in a cloth. Don't apply directly to your skin. Keep up the good work, I think you will back at band sooner than you think! Glad to have helped!!! Marie Report It

Reply:I stuck with jello for about a week afterwards. Good luck!
Reply:I had all 4 of mine removed 4 years ago. Two of mine were also horizontal. I think you should eat when you feel ok to eat. I had no swelling or pain, so I ate within like 4 hours of getting it done. And I was eating pretty normal foods at that time, nothing hard like chips though. Just wait until you feel ok to eat again.
Reply:I think you can eat when you are able to. Stay away from anything acidic -- you have open wounds in your mouth. This means anything citrus (orange juice, lemonade) AND also anything with tomato sauce. I made the terrible mistake of eating Spaghetti-Os (thinking the soft mushy noodles would be OK for my mouth). It felt like I was swooshing acid in my mouth. Be careful, and hope you feel better soon.
Reply:Your blender and straws are your very best friends right now. I suggest buying a few cans of soup and putting them through the blender until they are mashed thoroughly, then warming them just enough to take the chill off (extremely hot and cold things will hurt your swollen gums). Using the widest straw that you can find and fit in your mouth, draw SLOWLY until you have a mouthful, then swallow. Do not try to chew. Do not suck hard as it might dislodge your blood plugs in your extraction sites.

Do this every time you get hungry--if that means six small meals a day, then so be it!
Reply:It takes about a week until you can start eating solid food again. I got 4 wisdom teeth pulled out and had to stay on liquids for a week. The time between ur removal and band camp seems 12 days, so i'm sure you can start eating by then.
Reply:Sounds like you're doing a lot of good things to recover as quickly as possible. Yay, you!

When I had my wisdom teeth out, one of which was sideways and they had to take it out in pieces, I remember getting very tired of smooshy food by about the 5th day... I couldn't get my mouth open very far either, but I was going nuts, so I went to Taco Bell and got myself a Burrito Supreme (if you don't remember, it's basically a beef and bean burrito with everything on it including sour cream; yum.) I couldn't open my mouth to bite it, so I spooned it in with a spork (sporked it in?). I kind of just mooshed it with my tongue and swallowed it. It was probably the best Burrito Supreme I ever had... I made sure to rinse really well so there were no particles of food in the canyons where my teeth had been. And I'm here 30 years later to tell the tale.

Each day that goes by will reduce the swelling more and more; I would really, really think you'll be almost back to normal by the 12th. : )
Reply:I also had impacted wisdom teeth that had to be cut out... and boy when i got home i was hungry... i couldnt chew stuff but i was eating won-ton soup like an hour or so after i got home!! also milk shakes and other broths were best to eat!

Wisdom teeth removed without being sedated?

I'm deathly afriad of being sedated (put to sleep) and I may need to have my wisdom teeth removed soon. None of them are impacted, they've all almost fully grown in like my other teeth. Have any of you ever had any wisdom teeth extracted on just local anaesthesia and not had to be put to sleep? I have a pretty high threshhold for pain, and I don't mind the gore at all (had teeth pulled before %26amp; root canal done while awake). But everyone tells me to get put to sleep for my wisdom teeth for some reason. I think I'd rather just let the dentist punch me in the face as hard as he could to knock me out!

Wisdom teeth removed without being sedated?
hey u dont have to put to sleep to go for any tooth extraction ( even wisdom tooth ) its just ur tooth which shud be sedated .... if local anesthisa can do the job then why to go for general ...we put the patient to sleep only when the surgery has to be done to a special patient(handicap pt.)otherwise NO NEED ...n about the pain ... it varies from patient to patient ... few complain of pain n few dnt after the extraction of wisdom tooth ... but analgesic can do wonders .... n ur dental surgeon will definately prescribe u the medicine after surgery ...so dont worry ... no get ur wisdom extracted while u r awake .. !
Reply:I have had one wisdom tooth removed. It was fully erupted. I was not knocked out, just the regular local shot. The pain really kicks in later in the day when the shot has worn off and you have a gaping hole in your mouth. But, if the doctor gives you a script for pain killers have it filled before the numbness wears off. You'll be fine being awake.
Reply:NO, you dont have to be put under to have your wisdome teeth removed. your dentist may prefer otherwise as their standard procedure. but since their is no impaction or infections it should be straight forward to complete under local anethesia/freezing
Reply:I work for a dentist and we never put anyone out for wisdom exts. It isnt a big deal. I myself had one taken out a couple months ago. Never needed pain killers or anything.
Reply:If you are having all 4 of your wisdom teeth removed, I would highly recommend sedation. And it is just that... IV sedation. Most patients are under the impression that they are totally put to sleep as if they are having surgery in the operating room when this is not the case. An IV is administered to the patient to put them into a 'twilight' sort of sleep. The patient is still able to open their mouth wider if the dentist asks them to do so, etc... yet generally they never remember a thing that happens during the procedure... just as you don't remember life as an infant... it happened... and you reacted... you just don't remember it. Of course, there is some risk... there is risk with any procedure.. there is even risk in just receiving a dental injection of anesthetic to numb you... but the risk is minimal. And another good thing about the sedation is that once you get home you sleep for a really, really long time so you're not awake to have to deal with the soreness, numbness, etc. I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed by an oral surgeon when I was 20 years old... way before I entered the dental field and I was scared to death myself... I even sat in the chair before the procedure crying and telling the dentist how scared I was... I had a very good doctor and he talked to me in a very soothing voice while he administered the IV and before I knew it I was waking up and the procedure was over. Really, you have nothing to worry about. Hope this helped put you at ease.

I had my two lower wisdom teeth surgically removed 5 days ago...?

both teeth were impacted so i know that makes it a little more complicated but the pain hasn't let up at ALL, it's unbearable. My mouth is extremely swollen, and i can't open it more than half an inch. The oral surgeon gave me loritab and when they didn't work i got percocets and they haven't helped either. Am i the only one or has anyone had a similar experience that could give me some hope?

I had my two lower wisdom teeth surgically removed 5 days ago...?
ok you need to go back to the dr, when your wisdom teeth are impacted sometimes you can have what is called a dry socket it is extremely terrible pain and swelling, basically you have a empty hole. Call the dr they will pack it up and you feel better almost instantly dont take meds they wont help you need to get to the dr ASAP
Reply:take 4 ibuprofen that helped me i just had all four out 6 days ago and it helps also put ice on it
Reply:vikedon
Reply:The only thing that worked for me is going to the hospital and having them put me on an IV with torodol in it. At least it was only two you had out. I had my bottom teeth out thursday of one week, and then had to go to the dental surgeon to get the other two out because of where they were the following thursday. All 4 of mine were impacted.
Reply:put ice on it and tell me the pain because my teeth needs to be pulled out from the gum did u need stiches cause i do then

How long should the pain and swelling last after wisdom teeth extraction?

I'm 16 years old and I had four wisdom teeth removed three days ago (1 impacted). My cheeks have swelled up more than twice than normal size and my gums where the teeth were removed have been throbbing. I was told that the pain and swelling subside after a few days but a remain skeptical as the pain in my mouth doesn't feel any better. Does anybody have any extra information or advice about the pain and swelling?

How long should the pain and swelling last after wisdom teeth extraction?
Your sugeon should have givin you pain medication for you to take. And don't worry about the pain. I know that it is uncomfortable and its not fun so just eat some smoothies...no straws though, and relax!
Reply:hi there, don't worry i just had 2 lower wisdom teeth removed a few days ago -- one impacted. I swelled up a little but no bruising. Just ice it daily -- 10 min on each cheek and rotate. You had 4 done so it will take awhile...just eat plenty of baby food.....do not use a straw and just plenty of rest.

I had both bottom wisdom teeth removed a week ago tomorrow, am having pain....?

Both teeth were impacted badly and one of them were sideways in my mouth.I am 33 years old.I was doing Ok the first couple days(in alot of pain now).I went back to the oral surgeon today and he told me I have dry socket,he put something in my left side where the extraction was removed and it felt better right away.I was wondering why is my other side hurting now? I havent really had problems with it until today, and whatever he put in there, is that going to help it heal or is that just to take away the pain.I will try to explain it, it was like a little gauze and he placed it in the area and it had a funny taste to it.I still can taste it in my mouth 7 hours later. Please Help...

I had both bottom wisdom teeth removed a week ago tomorrow, am having pain....?
He probably put clove oil in it. That works wonders with dry socket pain. You may be developing it on the other side, too. I would call your oral surgeon again, and you may need to go in for multiple treatments.

Help! dental worries! Me and my "wisdom teeth"?

I recently had a dental checkup about odd pains in the back of my gums. It turns out that i have wisdom teeth popping up, and they are impacted.

They dont hurt me 90% of the time, but i get an occasional twinge. I may get them removed, but i want to know details, such as do i really need them removed, or can i just leave them in.

Im not bothered about having the operation, but mucus and blood in my mouth doesn't sound exciting to be honest..

Any help given is welcome

Help! dental worries! Me and my "wisdom teeth"?
I had mine removed like a year ago. It kinda hurts more if you don't get them removed. I had mine a couple of months before the pain got so bad the dentist had to take them out. You get stitches in your gums but they don't hurt and then in a couple of days your fine.
Reply:If they are impacted, they will not come in and pain will only increase.

Get it done on a school break. You will be tired a few days, and have to eat mooshy food, but it's usually not a big deal for most.
Reply:if you can live with them then you don't have to have the surgery alot of people keep their wisdom teeth.
Reply:Mucus and blood will be there for a couple days and then you will be alright. You will be spitting and drooling a lot.
Reply:I made the choice to wait and ended up with crowded teeth and migraines. I had to have the surgery anyway and it was much, much worse than if I would have had it done when they first suggested it. Just get it over with!
Reply:I had my wisdom teeth pulled with the same symptoms as you. The dentist recommended it because over time wisdom teeth can caus the rest of your teeth to move and become crooked because your jaw is small. Also, i didnt enjoy biting my cheeks every now and then. The surgery is nothing, but the pain after is horrific! I was swolen for about 3 days and was on constant pain medication. the leakage of blood was digusting. But I'm glad I did it because I dont bit my cheeks anymore....
Reply:well... all four my wisdom teeth grew in and i dont have to get the m pulled because they aren't pushing my teeth forward... if your dentist said that they will make you an overbite, its up to you after they grow in to get them removed.... but sooner it depends because they do hurt when they grow in really bad... its the worst feeling EVER!!! but two of my wisdom teeth grew in overnight so i didnt feel those... just be careful because its worst than a basic toothache!!!!
Reply:Just get it done.. I waited and they ended up doing it while I was in the Marines. They only gave me two shots to numb it and pulled four teeth, the next day I was back to training. So at least they might knock you out first. Plus 10 Min's of pain is better than crowded teeth any day.
Reply:If they are impacted, you'll need to get them out. I'd suggest sooner rather than later to save you the pain they will cause you by trying to come in...

I got mine out 12 years ago. I was sore for 5 days. Some of my friends were only sore for a day. It depends on the person. Just camp out on your parents couch for a week, your mom will love to take care of you - ;)
Reply:Presumably there aren't any dentists who have looked at your x-rays to give an informed decision. It really depends on where they are and what problems they are likely to cause if left in place. If you are really unsure, go see another dentist or oral surgeon for a second opinion.

I got mine out when I was 17 and really it was no biggie. Hardly any blood or mucus. The most annoying part was food getting caught in the suture area.
Reply:As a dentist and former wisdom tooth patient, I can understand your concerns. If your teeth are partially in, the procedure will likely be much easier than if they are bony -impacted. When I had mine out at age 14--three erupted,1impacted-- I had IV sedation. The surgery lasted about 20 minutes and three hours later, I was playing basketball in my backyard. I threw away the pain meds because I didn't need them. I may have been an exception, but I've had lots of patients with more difficult extractions that did just as well post-operatively. To be safe, allow 2-3 days after your surgery to get back on your feet. Excessive bleeding is not normal--what most people experience is blood-tinged saliva that for whatever reason they are less willing to swallow. I hope this helps and that your surgery goes well.
Reply:ok, well there are two possible answers to your question, one: if no part of your wisdom teeth are poking through on the bottom then yes you can keep them in with very few problems other than a little pain here and there because they are applying pressure on your other teeth, however the ones that are on top will eventually elongate if they "poke through" and because they don't have anything to chew on. second answer: if they are poking through GET THEM OUT!! if you leave them in and any part of them are poking through you are going to have a hard time keeping those areas clean and the teeth will become decayed and if you let it go on to long you can end up with an abscess which can kill you, not to mention will end up costing you a lot more money, pain, and healing time..more money because the dentist will end up having to pull the teeth out in many sections because its gonna fall apart, more pain because the infection is acidic and the lidocaine the dentist is going to use to get you numb is a base (chem. 101..acids and bases neutralize each other)so your not going to get very numb and there is only so much of the drug the doc can give you, and finally more healing time because its going to be a real pain for the dr. to go in and pull out all the little fragments of tooth out plus you will have to be on anti-biotics for a while to kill the infection...my advice get them all out at the same time if your young (younger than 25)if older get them out one at a time. as for the "mucus and blood" there wont be any mucus if you take care of yourself properly (e.g. follow the dentists post operative instructions which i will post along with this)but there will be a little blood that will turn your saliva pink or red for a few days its nothing to worry about its normal if it wont stop bleeding get a wet tea bag (like Lipton iced tea type tea bags) and clamp down on it on the sites where you are bleeding, there is something (cant remember what)in the tea that helps stop the bleeding or apply a damp rolled up piece of gauze to the sites and clamp down applying pressure so it works like a pressure dressing. now how to take care of yourself: 1. after surgery apply a ice pack 15 min on 15 min off for a few hours to help reduce swelling during the first 24 hrs after 24 hrs apply a warm compress to promote blood flow to the area which will promote healing. 2. NO SMOKING!!! smoking will cause negative pressure, negative pressure will suck the blood clot out, sucking the blood clot out exposes the bone, exposed bone in your mouth causes dry socket which is considered by some women worse than child birth. 3. no drinking through a straw (see #2)4. no carbonated beverages like soda, beer, champaign, ect.. the carbonation can dissolve the blood clot and you will get dry socket. 5. no spitting, yes your gonna bleed a little, yes it tastes nasty, ect.. spitting creates negative pressure (see #2) negative pressure = dry socket just swallow it its not going to hurt you, if you must spit lean over the sink and let the stuff fall out of your mouth like you are drooling. 6. no swishing, swishing = negative pressure = dry socket (see a pattern?). 7. no mouth wash for about a week, will burn like hell. 8. avoid brushing the affected area, you don't wanna brush the clot out..dry socket, yeah...thats about all i can remember from the script i had to memorize and recite daily for 2 years hope it helps

Plant question

I'm 29 and I still have my wisdom teeth. Why should I bother pulling them?

One of the four is close to erupting the surface of the gumline back there so there is a possibility of cavity issues. Fine I can accept that, otherwise, that one plus the other three are slammed angularly against the adjacent molars and are not bothering me. I say just keep filling in the cavity prone wisdom tooth. Also, as I am getting older the wisdom teeth are becoming more and more impacted to my jaw bone making extraction a dangerous procedure in terms of nerve damage. I enjoy knowing that if I bite my tongue accidentally I'll stop before it gets gruesome. Help, I'm at a cross-road here. Yank or leave?

I'm 29 and I still have my wisdom teeth. Why should I bother pulling them?
Well, obviously, you should have had these out years ago and now you are facing quite a dilemma. As you get older the healing process decreases and now after the teeth are removed you will have some defects back there [depressions in the bone]. If you decide to leave the teeth there I can promise you that you will have more trouble down the road and end up having some of them out when you are much older [due to cavities, cysts, you name it!]and it will be MUCH harder then than now. Leaving them in is not a good thing so bite the bullet, see an oral surgeon and get it done. Good luck!
Reply:Your dentist should advise you, I can only speak my experience. I was told to get them removed as they were growing in sideways and crowding my other teeth. I did'nt heed that warning, and they did indeed crowd my teeth, weakening them and making them easily broken. I know have a very horrible set of teeth ( the ones left) that all need to be yanked and I have to have false teeth, at least on top. So, I would ask your dentist his opinion and if he says, yank, baby, I'd yank. OR you will be 45 and toothless like me.
Reply:i think you've answered your own question, buddy. if its obviously bothering you that much, why wouldn't you want to alleviate it?yank it....
Reply:If your dental adviser says pull them, do it. You descirbe some real problems that clearly will not get better with age. If you jaw had enough room so they could all be there in normal order like nature intended, they need not be pulled. But you say they are impacted and subject to cavities. What do you do when they do and your choise is root canal to save the tooth or pull them then. If you have insurance , do it now and get it paid for.
Reply:If they don't bother you than its not nothing to worry about. but they can shift your teeth than it will have to be pulled. Than if you like to have a perfect smile it will lead to braces and that's 4200 dollars total plus cleanings, visits ext. But if they hurt and you like to have a good smile I will get them looked at by your local dentist to be on the safe side.
Reply:Get them taken out now. One of mine was impacted and it almost killed me. They will cause you nothing but grief later in life. I was 24 when mine were taken out. My husband is 31 and he is having his taken out next month.
Reply:Ever hear that expression about, in the old days, people died at 30? Wisdom teeth were what killed people. The impacted teeth would become infected, and the infection goes right next door to the brain. Listen to your dentist.
Reply:I would have them yanked. Mine fully came in with no problem, but they are so far back in there that it has always been hard to clean them properly. Now that I'm older, they are weak and breaking. I currently have 2 left to get pulled and one of them is hurting pretty bad that I can't even eat or close my mouth. My hubby still has his as they are growing sideways towards his other teeth. They dont' bother him, but we have noticed they are making the rest of his teeth crooked.

Get them yanked and save yourself from worse pain in the future!

Wisdom Teeth dilemma?

Well I'm 18 and about 6 months ago my bottom left wisdom tooth started coming out and not too much later my bottom right wisdom tooth started to come out as well. To this day neither one of those tooth have completely erupted. One is half way there and the other is barely out (about a third). My top right wisdom tooth (my top left never did anything?) also came after about 2 weeks my bottoms first showed but it only took 3 days to fully grow in. So I'm sort of stumped on whats taking the bottom to so long. I experienced ABSOLUTELY NO pain with these wisdom teeth, my top wisdom tooth came in an i didn't even notice it. My dentist says I should have all my wisdom teeth taken out not because they are impacted because they could potentially decay the back of my molars. I might take them out later but since its so much money and i have no insurance i was contemplating later. But back to my question. How long does it usually take a wisdom tooth to completely erupt?

Wisdom Teeth dilemma?
Many never completely erupt due to the angle of growth and the position in the jaw. Plan on getting them out by about age 25 or 26. That way, your jaw bone is still at it's most flexible and you still heal well. It doesn't sound like it's urgent to get them removed.
Reply:My advise is to go and get a Pano xray done. This will show how the wisdom teeth are coming in. You need to have them extracted. They do no good... only cause trouble. They are hard to clean around and unless you have room for them they just cause trouble. I have seen people that have all 4 wisdome teeth and they keep them clean and have room for them. Just have all 4 pulled at once at once one healing time and it is really not that bad.
Reply:as per ur description, it seems ur bottom molar is impacted. but u need an xray to determine what sort of an impaction it is and whether it requires an extraction or just the jaw bone needs to be scraped off a bit. as far as the time required for eruption is concerned, wisdom teeth have to erupt within 18-21 years of age, they may be taking longer than a few months in ur case but an xray is definitely required to determine whether it is following the right path or is stuck up somewhere/against somethin(bone or adjacent tooth) ie, impacted. and u have to extremely careful about ur oral hygiene to prevent it from catchin caries.. preferably use a chlorhexidine mouthwash.

I just got my wisdom teeth taken out 2 days ago, how long will it take to heal?

I got all 4 wisdom teeth taken out, they were all impacted and 2 of them had really deep roots. My face is really swollen and the side of my lips are cut up cause the dentist said my mouth was to small and had to force it make it bigger. So i look really messed up around my lips and i have this work event on tuesday october 24. Im woundering if i going to be healed with the swelling and the cuts by then.

I just got my wisdom teeth taken out 2 days ago, how long will it take to heal?
It depends on the individual case. Sounds like you had a rather rough time. I would allow a couple of weeks.
Reply:Depends, Fully about 2 1/2 weeks

But back on solid foods in 2 tops if you stay on what they gave you.

thats what it was for me anyway. but it would also determine on how well the sergon was. mine was great so yeah.
Reply:i am sorry to say this but it will take 10 days for it to heale
Reply:i would say a week tops....
Reply:It all depends, you may try Zinc it is suppose to be a healing agent. You should heal in half the time. It also depends if you had any other problems like dry sockets.(where the area that the teeth were removed from do not bleed.) If you had dry sockets your dentists would have you come back to have them packed. the packing holds the sockets open and lets them heal from inside out.
Reply:Hi Star21,

The swelling might be down by then-you should use cold compresses on %26amp; off all weekend to be sure, I am not sure about the cuts- you could probably use make-up to hide them. I hate to be the one to tell you your face will probably be black, blue then evidently yellow I stayed home from work for 3 weeks took a medical leave of absent ( i was in contact with people). Be sure to take the antibotic %26amp; any pain medicine as this will help, %26amp; gargle salt/baking soda water as soon as possible this helps heal the inside of your mouth. Good luck %26amp; have a good day! :0)

P.S. I had 4 impacted teeth removed then got a dry socket the best thing for this is to soak a tea bag in hot water %26amp; either bite down on it or hold it in place %26amp; take Pain medicine.
Reply:I had all four of mine taken out too. It took my face a week for the swelling to go down, and about a month for the places where my teeth once were to completely here. It is very important to clean teh holes with the squeezy thing they gave you, so u can get the drainiage out. It is going to stink believe me, so carry some breth mints...lol....teh swelling should be gone down by tuesday, but your cuts will take a lot longer to completely heal. Be careful about getting food in there too, you dont want an infection.
Reply:Get plenty of rest take the meds the doctor gave you and don't eat anything that will bother your mouth I had mine out and in 5 days was good to go and I did not have stitches in my mouth. The swelling will go away any day now. Good Luck

No Antibotics today when i had my wisdom teeth out.?

I had all 4 wisdom teeth removed today....top two was impacted and the bottom two had broke the skin. The oral surgeon did not give me no antibotics....he just gave me Lortab 7.5 !!! I have read other people has took antibotics when they had this done...now i am worried.I am in soooo much pain right now and i am running out of gauze he gave me to stop the bleeding. It has been almost 7 hours now since i have been home.I also feel this boney thing sticking out of my gum under where he removed the right bottom wisdom tooth. It rubs against my tounge. He told me i had no stitches. So what could it be. Sorry so long......i am just worrying and hurting at the same time.My brother got dry socket with his and i hope to not get that.

No Antibotics today when i had my wisdom teeth out.?
I had mine out a couple weeks ago and I just got pain meds. They probably won't give you antibiotics unless your sockets get infected.

Grab some ice packs or a heating pad, I used both. And take your medication.

The bony thing you feel is common, don't worry. I can't remember what people have said it is, the bone or something...
Reply:If your gums aren't infected, why would the dentist bother giving you antibiotics when you don't need them? Overuse of antibiotics leads to drug resistant bacteria.

I had an infection in my gums before I got my wisdoms removed, so I had antibiotics, but I needed them. Wisdom tooth removal sucks. I feel for ya right now. :(

I am getting 4 wisdom teeth cut out tommorow! I am so scared!?

Tommorow I having all of my wisdom teeth cut out they are all impacted. I am going to be half awake and half asleep. I am so scared of the needle used for the IV and the pain afterwards!! Can someone help calm me down?

I am getting 4 wisdom teeth cut out tommorow! I am so scared!?
I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth out at once. I remember the gas, then asked the assistant when they would start. She said it was OVER! I was drowsy for an hour, then rested for a couple of days. Not bad at all.
Reply:Trust me, dont be afraid of the surgery part. I got all four out this summer. Iv will be a little prick and then you will fall asleep. When you wake up you won't feel a thing where the IV was. When you wake up you will be dizzy, but in no pain at all, just very numb. Make sure the dr gives you tylenol 3 or any painkiller, you will be fine. Don't worry,
Reply:i just got my wisdom teeth pulled a couple months ago, and i was scared too. it's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be. the IV needle does hurt a bit, but not enough to stress about. the worst part i would say is the recovering part. My mouth was numb for about 8 hours after the procedure. An the pain isnt all that bad, with the pain meds you get its not that bad.
Reply:They will probably put you on nitrous before they us the IV. This means you won't feel the IV. Afterwards that pain will not be horrible. You'll be numb for the majority of the day you have them out, so you really won't feel anything tomorrow. They'll likely give you some really strong to help with the pain. A lot of people are out and about the first day anyway.
Reply:Don't worry and trust me you would rather have them cut out than pulled. Cut out is so much less pain, and in my opinion you will recover quicker. What you should do is take a pain killer before you even go to the doctor that way you are already on a pain killer when they cut them out and when you get you perscription take on ASAP. You will be alright
Reply:I had mine done 8 years ago. Just so happens one of the meds they prescribed me I ended up being allergic to...(we didn't know I was allergic, I was only 18 when I had them done and was hardly subjected to any medicine) But one of the drugs they gave me made my O2 stats drop to the 40's. I was rushed to the ER after only being home 30 minutes.

I hate to put down such negativity and debated on whether to write this at all, but I just want you to be aware of what you take afterwards and have someone with you when you are home so they can keep an eye on you. Good luck!! I'm sure I'm just one of those 1 in a million oddballs. :)
Reply:Firstly no one likes needles they suck and if you did like it there would be a problem. Ask the anesthesiologist to put some emla cream on the IV site B4 the Iv is placed. Secondly there will be some discomfort after the extractions and possible bruising. But in the end the pain of the impacted wisdom teeth will be gone. There is nothing i can really do to help calm you but to let you know that this procedure will help you in the long run. Yep it will be painful at first but your doc should give you a script for tyleno 3s i think??? Oh just incase they forget to tell you DO NOT drink through a straw, smoke or rinse your mouth after this is done as you need to form a clot in the sockets. This sounds weird but you dont want dry socket....trust me...from a PDA
Reply:I just had this procedure done last week. There is nothing to be scared of. I was terrified myself, and I found out that I had gotten all worked up for nothing! It was actually not a big deal. I had an IV sedation ... they give you "laughing gas" first so you don't even feel anything. I woke up during the extraction, but just told myself to go back to sleep and I did. Mine had to be cut out too, and I am just fine. Make sure that you follow all the directions from your dentist and you will also be fine.

So you have nothing to worry about.

Going to sleep for wisdom teeth?

So my dentist recommends I have 2 wisdom teeth taken out that are not impaced they are already up. But only one of them, the bottom one is causing some problems. Anyways he says that if you take the bottom one out you should also take the top out.

I think I only want to have the bottom one out at least for now. But my question is even though they are already in (not impacted) the person I scheduled my appointment said they can make me go to sleep. I'm wondering do they normally let ppl go to sleep if they arent impacted and you only take out one wisdom tooth. And also, do you think I should go to sleep cuz I have no clue what its like to be knocked out.

Also I know this sounds crazy but I always wanted to know what happens if when ur getting your teeth pulled and you needa pee cuz ur asleep and you cant go up to go to the bathroom. Does your body just allow you to keep holding it in even if you needa go or do you go in ur pants

Going to sleep for wisdom teeth?
I had my wisdom teeth pulled when I was in my early 20's. The first time I had it done ( I had mine pulled in two stages), I was given a shot of a fast acting drug called pentathol-and I woke up 30 minutes later and the surgery was done. Contrary to what these other writers have said, you will NOT bleed all over the place when you have these teeth pulled- I didn't, and I don't know of anyone who did. There may be some bleeding, though, and your mouth and tongue will be numb for a while after the surgery. That's why you will be discouraged from speaking or attempting to speak until the anesthetic wears off- so you don't bite your tongue and bruise or cut while it's numb. Once the anesthetic wears off, you will be quite sore for a few days or a week while the dry sockets where your teeth were heal up. These will normally not be sutured, because they must heal from the inside out. You will be told to rinse your mouth with warm salt water after eating, and to make sure to brush your teeth gently but thoroughly after each meal. If you had an infection under the pulled teeth, or an abscess, then you will be given antibiotics. Your dentist will tell you what pain medication you can take, and will prescribe something for you which will allow you to sleep at night.

As far as needing to pee goes, you need to use the bathroom before surgery if you are worrried about this. Sometimes, yes, some of the anesthetics used for this type of surgery can cause a loss of bladder control, so take a hint and go to the bathroom before you leave the house for your appointment. The shot which puts you out is the best way to have this surgery done- you will be much less likely to experience pain, and it will be A LOT LESS SCARY to go this route than it would be if you go the route of conscious sedation. The dentist or oral surgeon will be able to work more quickly as well, because he or she will not have to worry as much about you resisting or fighting because of pain or fear.

What's it like to be put out? Pentathol is a very fast acting drug- and basically, what you will feel is a sharp little sting like a mosquito bite, followed by a feeling of floating on a cloud.( Yes, pentathol does produce quite a "high".) This will be followed by vision loss and sleep- and when you wake up, it will be as if you had gone to sleep on your own, without drugs. The surgery will not start until you are completely asleep- which, with pentathol, normally only takes 3 to 5 minutes at most. This is how it went when I had the surgery, and it is probably how things will go for you. If you choose to go the route of conscious sedation, then you will still get a shot- but it won't be enough to put you to sleep. Instead you will be very drowsy and tired. You will be asked to obey simple commands, such as opening your mouth when told, and you need to be aware that the dentist will give you local anesthesia to block pain around the surgical area. You will also be able to see what the dentist or surgeon is doing, and this is typically what scares a lot of patients. There is always some bleeding associated with any type of surgery, and sometimes, with dental surgery, there is quite a bit. If you are squeamish about the sight of blood, this is not the route to go for surgery. I went this route when I had my second set of wisdom teeth pulled, and believe me, I wished that I had gone the other way and gotten put under when they did this. I was plenty scared during the procedure, even with the anesthetic and sedation. I'm not normally squeamish, but this was upsetting to me in a lot of ways.

I hope that this helps you out.
Reply:You get knocked out within give seconds that they give you the anesthesia. You will be completely knocked out until they wake you up. When I got put to sleep, it felt like I blinked , and they woke me up and were already done. Don't even worry. You should just do all the teeth. It's not that big of a deal; you won't feel it and no you will not pee your pants, just go before.
Reply:Good question!

I think they only put you to sleep if it's going to be painful..so I'd take up the offer! It isn't scary or anything- but it is a little weird. But you'd be fine! :)

If you go to the bathroom before the procedure, you'll be fine. They won't put you out for that long. I've been put out a few times for surgeries...I think your body just knows that it needs to wait. You still have controll of your muscles, you're just "asleep". So just like at night, when you wake up you can go if you need to.

Good luck! :)
Reply:I just got gas, and I heard a, not quite, clink sound. I asked what happened and he said he took one of my teeth, I just thought he dropped his tool in my mouth. It doesn't hurt, but I guess I didn't really answer your question, sorry. i need to stay awake and typing helps my brain not to sleep.
Reply:it's more interesting if they just give you laughing gas. well unless the sight of a lot of blood freaks you out.

I was awake, with laughing gas, for 3 impacted wisdom teeth. Not a bad experience overall. Well I mean obviously it sucked but it wasn't especially bad. My brother was asleep for his and according to talking to him it sucked just about as much as mine did.

the bad part, really, is the few days after.

also if you are that worried about having to pee then just make sure you go right before they put you under. lol
Reply:Been there had that.

Actually I had very weak enamel on my teeth, and the thought of the dentist pulling teeth while I was aware of it scared me witless, so I said "knock me out"

Had it few years earlier with 2, then when they had to do a "clearance" later.

Seriously, you feel a slight scratch on the hand, try to count to 20, I think I got to about 6, wake up later sure ya feel sick a bit, but NO major pain and seeing them struggle to pull em out.

In regard to last part, never woke up remotely damp . . . body works fine
Reply:Hi. I had my wisdom teeth, one completely out and one partially out on the same side, taken out. I had only local anesthesia (a shot in the mouth). If you are not scared of the dentist and mouth work, that is all that is needed. You will feel him tugging at the tooth and the release when it comes out, but no pain. Being put to sleep has significant risks and should only be done when necessary. The recovery from having the teeth out is painful, but not unmanagable. Your diet will be restricted for a few days as will be smoking. It will be sore for a while. You really do not want to do it 4 times, so taking two from the same side at a time is a good idea. As for what it's like to be put to sleep, you won't remember the final moments before it happens. Waking up is disorienting and feels real weird. I absolutely did not like that feeling and would not put myself in that situation unless necessary, not to mention the health risks. Also, it costs significantly more to be put to sleep than the local anesthesia. As for the bathroom, I am not sure, but they would be able to tell you that ahead of time. As your clothes will be on, you could wear a thick pad if you are concerned. Also, they have done this before and anything you do or don't do will be ignored in a professional manner. They know to expect these things and have seen it before. They know you are not in control. Hope this helps.
Reply:it's just like this "count backwards from 100"

"100"

"99"

"9..98"

"..." *sleep*

just let them knock you out, pee before you go and don't drink anything.

they're gonna bleed like crazy as well, btw.
Reply:When they put you to sleep, you are not asleep for that long. It is not like surgery done in a hospital. They do not put a tube down your throat or anything.

I was put to sleep when i had all four of my wisdom teeth cut out. They give an IV and sedate you with a Valium and a sedative. Your really only asleep for less than 30 minutes to an hour.

I would go ahead and get all what you need pulled cause why drag it out and get one pulled here and there when they need all pulled?

It is best to have them all done at once. I done fine when i had mine pulled. You will be groggy for a while and in pain but they will give you pain pills plus motrin helps. I would not worry if i were you. You will not pee on yourself.
Reply:I would choose to take the sleep: First of all u don't get as nevice when u see these big pliers in your mouth.(srry that sentence might of made u nervice.) Second of all it doesn't hurt as mouch it might start hurting like 4 hours after surgery but it won't be as bad as if you didn't get annestia. Here is what will happen:

1. They will probobly look in your mouth to see what you need.

2. Next most likely they will give you this mask that is connected by a tube and they will have you take some deep breathes. While doing this you might feel a little light headed I felt very heavy but some people feel very light.

they also might give you a shot but that normally doesn't happen when u got to sleep only if u stay awake

3. Don't worry about peeing I've been in 5 surgery's without going to the bathroom and never leeked if you are worries about it then you should go before you get there.

Next they will give you stiches these will probably be in your mouth for a week and sumtimes fall out before that. When you first wake up you will not know were you are for the first like 2 seconds but then you remember it's weird then you will just feel like you want to fall back asleep. ( you probobly will) You will have many like cotton swbs in your mouth from all your bleeding you need to change them every other hour or so

depending on bleeding! Good Luck you will do fine and it is your decision no one can make this decision for you but i suggest you do what the doctor suggests remember he has done this many times before if you have any more question you can email me i've been through many operations and i am just 12

Going to sleep for wisdom teeth?
Hey :) not too sure about only getting one of the two wisdom teeth removed but im sure that if your dentist/dental surgeon recommended that you get them both out that you should, I'm sure he knows what he's talking about and didn't do like 6 years study for nothing :P

About the going to sleep thing, it's nothing to be worried about. I've done it a few times before, for wisdome teeth, and my appendectomy. They may be letting you have the option of having a general anaesthetic if they feel that you may be too anxious to have just a local anaesthetic in your gums.

Getting 'knocked out' is just like falling asleep, you know when you're dead tired and you shut your eyes, and when you open them again its morning? Thats what its like, one minute you're breathing in oxygen and then next minute you're in recovery! Really quite awesome haha.

Also about having to go to the toilet, whenever you are going to be having a general anaesthetic they don't let you have any food or drink for 12 hours i think it is prior to srugery. So that way any food or drink would have had a chance to be excreted, and there's no chance of you vomiting up anything during surgery which is dangerous.

If it makes you feel any better I hav sat in on a lot of surgeries and not one of the patients wet themselves while under the knife, not even the surgeries that go for a few hours, so you'll be right :)
Reply:Well from my own experience with this the dentist tells you not to drink water the day of the surgery or atleast afew hours before so that probably means if you drank alot of water beforehand then you wouldn't have control over your bladder when you're asleep but I'm not 100% sure.

I also think that if their suggesting you do all four at once it is the best thing to do because after the surgery it is very painful and your face will be swollen and probably discoloured aswell.

One important tip you must know before you have it done is rinse your mouth with abit of salt in a cup of water each day after the surgery or maybe after everything you drink because you probably won't be eating food for awhile or be able to brush your teeth. The stupid dentist did not tell me this and of course I got an infection, prolonging my pain for about 2-3 weeks.

Good luck.
Reply:I had all four of mine taken out at once, and yes I was asleep. I wouldn't have done it any other way. It's a gradual thing... they gave me a tranquilizer, then an injection and had me count backwards from 100... last thing I remember was 90. You're not gonna be "out" that long, but I think your body keeps you from peeing if you needed to. If you're worried, just be sure and pee before you go.
Reply:You won't pee in your pants. If this was a common occurrence, I can't imagine dentists would want put folks to sleep. I would get them both out at the same time. The dentist is right, usually both need to be pulled. Why go through it twice?

I've had my wisdom teeth taken out. It's best to be put to sleep. That's the way it is usually done and I've never met anyone who's had it done while they are awake. As long as your asleep you might as well have them both taken out. When you "go to sleep" you get knocked out rather quickly and then you come to as if no time at all has passed. Your a little drowsy at first but that goes away quickly also. You won't pee your pants. Your body will hold it. It's always a good idea to go to the bathroom beforehand anyway I would think. Sweet dreams!

Here is a good write up about wisdom teeth extraction

http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/wisdom-...

Oh, this is good to know...

Why It Is Done

A wisdom tooth is extracted to correct an actual problem or to prevent problems that may come up in the future. When wisdom teeth come in, a number of problems can occur:

Your jaw may not be large enough to accommodate them, and they may become impacted and unable to break through your gums.

Your wisdom teeth may break partway through your gums, causing a flap of gum tissue to grow over them. Food and germs can become trapped under the flap and cause your gums to become red, swollen, and painful. These are signs of infection.

More serious problems can develop from impacted teeth, such as infection, damage to other teeth and bone, or the development of a cyst.

One or more of your wisdom teeth may come in at an awkward angle, with the top of the tooth facing forward, backward, or to either side.

So, maybe It'd be best if you did have them both taken out.

Oh, I had to add something.....

One of my daughters doesn't have any wisdom teeth. Her dentist said that he's been seeing young people that don't have any at all. He thinks that people are evolving without them because they aren't needed. Ask your dentist about that. I thought that was interesting!
Reply:You'll be asleep. I beilve that it'll hold it.
Reply:i am with you.go ofr removing the lower one first, then think for the upper one if req in the future.here i should add one thing that removing the lower one lets the upper opponent to erupt more allowing future caries, food impaction and other complications.to get rid of that you may think for removal of both.tooth extraction usually done under LA.when more than one tooth or impacted tooth req extraction in one sitting, consious sedation is the choice, which i hope your dentist certainly clearify.during the operative procedure your bladder will not trouble you.
Reply:When you are scheduled for dental under general, you are not allowed to eat or drink anything for approx. 6hrs before the surgery--you will not have to go to the bathroom. It is easier to be asleep for the procedure and the medication they use can sometimes decrease the post - surgery swelling.
Reply:if u get this treatment one-by-one

u will get the same pain two times

If u removed them in one visit

there is no extra pain for two removals get it done in one sitting

U can do normals easily

If there is no surgical procedure involved then you should be bale to get them out while awake.

But alot of dentists are different and they may have reasons for wanting to put you under.

Find out from your dentist if you can have them taken out in the chair as it can be alot cheaper.
Reply:i don't think this is a serious question. if your bladder is full, u av no choice
Reply:Drugs given to induce or maintain general anaesthesia are either given as:

* Gases or vapors (inhalational anaesthetics)

* Injections (intravenous anaesthetics)

Most commonly these two forms are combined, with an injection given to induce anaesthesia and a gas used to maintain it, although it is possible to deliver anaesthesia solely by inhalation or injection.

Inhalational anaesthetic substances are either volatile liquids or gases and are usually delivered using an anaesthesia machine. An anaesthesia machine allows composing a mixture of oxygen, anaesthetics and ambient air, delivering it to the patient and monitoring patient and machine parameters. Liquid anaesthetics are vaporized in the machine.

Many compounds have been used for inhalation anaesthesia, but only a few are still in widespread use. Desflurane, isoflurane and sevoflurane are the most widely used volatile anaesthetics today. They are often combined with nitrous oxide. Older, less popular, volatile anesthetics, include halothane, enflurane, and methoxyflurane. Researchers are also actively exploring the use of xenon as an anaesthetic.

Injection anaesthetics are used for induction and maintenance of a state of unconsciousness. Anaesthetists prefer to use intravenous injections as they are faster, generally less painful and more reliable than intramuscular or subcutaneous injections. Among the most widely used drugs are:

* Propofol

* Etomidate

* Barbiturates such as methohexital and thiopentone/thiopental

* Benzodiazepines such as midazolam and diazepam (commonly known as Valium)

* Ketamine is used in the UK as "field anaesthesia", for instance at a road traffic incident, and is more frequently used in the operative setting in the US.

The volatile anaesthetics are a class of general anaesthetic drugs. They share the property of being liquid at room temperature, but evaporating easily for administration by inhalation (some experts make a distinction between volatile and gas anesthetics on this basis, but both are treated in this article, since they probably do not differ in mechanism of action). All of these agents share the property of being quite hydrophobic (i.e., as liquids, they are not freely miscible with in water, and as gases they dissolve in oils better than in water

In dental terminology an "impacted" tooth refers to a tooth that has failed to emerge fully into its expected position. This failure to erupt properly might occur because there is not enough room in the person's jaw to accommodate the tooth, or because the angulation of the tooth is improper.

Classifications of impacted wisdom teeth.

Dentists use specific terms to describe the positioning of impacted wisdom teeth. The most common type of impacted wisdom tooth is one that is impacted mesially. The term "mesial" simply means that the wisdom tooth is angled forward, toward the front of the mouth.

The reason why some wisdom teeth are impacted is not an easy question to answer. A primary cause of wisdom tooth impaction is simply that there is inadequate jawbone space behind the person's second molar. Why this lack of space exists is not fully understood, however there does seem to be a correlation between large tooth size, tooth crowding, and the presence of impacted wisdom teeth.

It has been theorized that the coarse nature of stone age man's diet had the effect of producing extensive tooth wear, not only on the chewing surface of the teeth but also on the sides of the teeth where neighboring teeth rest against each other. The net effect of this wear would be a reduction in the collective "length" of the teeth as a set, thus creating enough jawbone space to accommodate the wisdom teeth by the time they erupted. In comparison the diet of modern man does not usually cause a significant amount of this type of tooth wear.

It has also been argued that the coarse nature of stone age man's diet, as compared to modern man's relatively soft diet, probably required more activity of the "chewing" muscles. This activity could have stimulated greater jawbone growth, thus providing more space for wisdom teeth.

The harsh and threatening world of the caveman no doubt often lead to the occurrence of broken teeth and even tooth loss. Once a tooth (or a portion of it) is missing the teeth behind it have a tendency to move forward. This shifting would make more jawbone space available for the wisdom teeth. In comparison, with the advent of modern dentistry there are relatively few reasons why a tooth should be lost or remain in a state of disrepair.
Reply:I had all four of my wisdom teeth remove without going to sleep. They may have numbed the area but I don't even remember that. If the teeth aren't impacted; you'll be find. I think the thoughts of it are worse than having it done. It may be better to have one side done at one time. The other side of your mouth will be okay while the first side is healing.

When they pull your teeth; they push down and put pressure on the tooth to loosen it; then they pull it out. Believe me; it is not that bad. You will remember how you worried so much for nothing.

Just pee before the treatment and you will be find.
Reply:Every dentist is different but most of the time for teeth that aren't impacted they will give a local anesthetic (which is a shot of novicaine) to help numben the area.

When I was a teenager one of my wisdom teeth was impacted (showed up on the x-ray at the time) but by the time I was ready to get it pulled it came up. And although impacted even a bit still the doctor was able to take it out with the local anesthetic.

Sometimes general anesthesia is done on patients who have particular medical problems where local anesthetic could create further problems such as due to low pain threshold.

I would recommend checking with your dentist directly to find out what his method for handling non-impacted wisdom teeth are.

My wisdom teeth were extracted today...?

I just had my four wisdom teeth removed today. They were all impacted and one was up near my sinus's. I am on pain medication/antibiotics and I feel okay...just a slight pain with swelling. I am 19 and I work in a restaurant as a waitress. I am living on my own and I need the money and I really don't want to miss anymore work. I only took today off, but I really want to be able to return to work tomorrow (Tuesday). Anyone who has had their wisdom teeth extracted, do you think I should be feeling okay enough to or no?? I'm staying with my parents and they don't even want me going back home tomorrow. What do y'all think??

My wisdom teeth were extracted today...?
I would not suggest going back to work while on pain medication because they can make you do some weird things.DO NOT EVER DRIVE WHILE ON PAIN MEDICINE!!!!!!!
Reply:I spent the first week slobbering blood into a trash can and was unable to talk at all. Yours does not sound this bad.
Reply:You will really have to see how you fell in the morning. You may have some more swelling and bruising tomorrow. Depending on how much effort it took to do the extractions, you may be fine. Do not drive if you are taking your pain meds, wait until you can switch to tylenol.
Reply:Don't do it. From experience you feel fine the first day from all the pain killers, but it will hurt way worse tomorrow. Most likely you will wake up feeling like your mouth was ran over by a train. I learned the hard way by trying to go to work the next day, and ending up off work longer from over doing it. Please take the day off and get your rest for a speedy recovery!
Reply:My opinion...If you are still having to take pain meds then you should not go. Ibuprofen works really well for mouth pain though...so you might go with that if you HAVE to go to work. I would probably go if I did not have to take the pain meds and the bleeding was under control.
Reply:I was about your same age when I had my teeth pulled, it was on a Friday and I did not have to go back to work until Monday, but I am pretty sure I felt pretty good the next day and could have worked, just be carefull not to drink with a straw to break open the stitches. If you need the money then go to work you will be fine =) I know what that is all about.
Reply:I stayed off for two days and then also had the weekend to get off the pain meds. You have to be able to function without the pain meds and eat before you can return to work.
Reply:My daughter had her wisdom teeth removed one week ago. Soon after she passed out twice and BP dropped to the floor. You really need to take at least three days off, which by the way the swelling is the worst on Day 3.....Please keep Ice Packs on as much as possible. Keep your tongue away from your incisions.....Don't eat anything that is hard...make certain you take your antibiotics and really take care of yourself...

Just today has my daughter been more like her old self..

It's not a game and once the medications wear off, you will want to get as much help as possible.....Lots of whipped potatos, jello, canned ravioli my daughter enjoyed that, anything really soft so you don't encourage dry socket.

If you get dry socket you'll be out of work for a month.....

STAY HOME THIS WHOLE WEEK!!!!!

Wisdom teeth & iv sedation?

Tomorrow I'm getting all 4 wisdom teeth removed. Top 2 are not impacted, and only 1 has partially errupted. Bottom 2 are very impacted, 1 being extremely close to a nerve. Would be nice to know what to expect during this procedure. Am told I will be sedated via IV. How long does this sort of procedure last? Anything else I should know about?

Wisdom teeth %26amp; iv sedation?
i was put under with the IV as well, and basically there's two parts to this.

the before: which involves the doctor telling you about the procedure, then giving you the IV to put you to sleep (i cried then, and not because it hurt or anything, just because i'm a big pansy and i'm scared of needles) they have you count backwards from ten, and i think you make it to about seven before you're completely conked out.

and then there's the after: you wake up a little sore, confused, and super thirsty. a nurse leads you to another room where you rest a minute until someone drives you home (cause trust me, you can't drive yourself)

i honestly have no idea how long the procedure lasted, but it's not too long. you're pretty much still in a daze when you wake up, and then you just head home and sleep for a few hours. you keep bleeding for a while, but you just change the gauze when it gets too bloody.

it sounds and looks awful, but if you take it easy (and DON'T drink out of straws) you'll be fine.
Reply:You'll be out like a light! It might take an hour, but you won't even know. I was doped up and stayed doped up for about a week. All 4 of mine were like on their sides.
Reply:I had the same thing done about 5 years ago. If I remember correctly it took about an hour but due to the sedation, it felt less than that. Mine went pretty good. You just have to follow the post-op instructions to make sure you don't get a dry socket which is extremely painful sometimes causing the doctor to have to go back in.
Reply:When I got my wisdom teeth out I was worried too but it was a breeze. Really, they put in the IV, I fell asleep and when I woke up I was wide awake, not too fuzzy headed and smiling. The recovery took a few weeks but I was in no pain and I relaxed and ate lots of mashes potatoes. I've heard what it's like to not be sedated and I was glad I was out for it.

What's it like?

You're only out for a half hour or so, but it will only feel like a second to you. You'll wake up with some cotton where the teeth were but you won't be in any pain. Whoever drives you home will pick up your antibiotics and take you home and you get to relax. I took one advil once and that was it. No big deal, truly not a bad experience for me at all. The dentist said to me "if you fall asleep smiling you will wake up smiling" and I did. You'll see, it will be easier than you think. Good Luck

P.S. My teeth were impacted too and it was still that easy for me.
Reply:have good happy people pick you up. i had all four taken out, they were all impacted.. the pain was gone in a few days.. the worst part was when i came down from the incredible high of being knocked out... i cried for hours for no good reason.
Reply:I had all four done at once, too,and they were impacted. I just remembered getting knocked out and that was that. The anesthesia made me really sick, however, when I tried moving around the first day. I threw up, but that was probably because of motion sickness, because when I lied down, I was okay. In pain, but okay. Just relax and everything should be fine.

Wisdom teeth out?

I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled, and I'm gonna be awake, I'm scared because the bottom 2 are impacted(running into the other teeth, horizonally). Anyone have this problem and had them out? Did it hurt at all?

Wisdom teeth out?
wow, you're brave if you're gonna get them taken out when you were awake...I had my four wisdoms (3 were impacted) out plus 2 other teeth out in one day in March of this year, and I was freaking scared just sitting in the waiting room, Luckily I made sure I was put to sleep, I remember when they were giving my the IV in my arm, and not mention my dentist guy was good looking it eased my pain. All I remember was getting the IV in and then waking up with them asking me whats my moms name lol. I had it done on a Friday morning, and I was out of it for about 2 days..I recommend you eat lots of ice cream, soups, and drink lots of juice so you could stay hydrated because i know when i drank water, the taste of blood was gross so i stuck to eating stuff with strong flavors to avoid the taste of blood as much as possible. Make sure to follow the after care and make sure you get lots of soup and ice cream at least to make sure you have food in your stomach because with the medicine they give you, you could get worse if you take the medicine thats strong and have an empty stomach.

I learned the hard way because I got sick and was throwing up alot, luckily I had my bf with me who ran to the drugstore at midnight to get me some nausea medicine which helped,, so before you get them pulled ask if you could get a prescription for nausea medicine...Just take you medicine and the pain wont be as bad, but im not gonna lie, you will be in serious pain for awhile, but try to take some medicine before the anestisia(sp) wears off after you get home.

I think the worst part was not being able to eat, the feeling of having empty spaces where you once had teeth, and having to look in the mirror when you clean out the blood and the pain when you had to brush your teeth the day after.. I think i went almost 2 weeks with sensitive teeth and feeling pain when i tried to bite into food. Try and eat lots of liquids and smoothies and ice cream, and when you are able to finally eat, make sure you eat really good to put back on the pounds you might have lost when not being able to eat.

Good luck honey, and dont worry, once you feel better, you'll be happy that is over and done with..See if you could get put to sleep, because thats better if you are scared, it costs more but i feel it was worth it all the way!!! Just eat, eat, eat, and rest alot, and just relax because everything will be fine :)
Reply:Mine were like that and I was awake when they were taken out. I had laughing gas, which helps you relax. I didn't feel a thing! The next couple of days I was sore, but the pain pills took care of it. Just follow your dentist's instructions carefully afterward, so you don't get dry socket, and relax. It will be fine.
Reply:i had all four wisdom teeth removed at once and i didn't feel a thing. they give you this anesthetic and it's like your in lala land. i was so sleepy afterward. there is no pain during it's the after! your mouth will be swollen it may hurt more because the bottom ones are the ones that seem to hurt more. it may be painful to open your mouth a few hours after, but the worst pain shouldn't last longer than 10 days after. i WOULD NOT want to be awake for this! i was awake when they took one of my molars (not wisdom teeth out) because it was rotten but it was not that bad. you don't feel anything but pressure in that case, but having teeth pulled that have yet to break though is painful, i would not want to be awake for that. my wisdom teeth were impacted also, but the anesthesia is necessary it helped a lot. my advice is ANESTHESIA!! Good luck!
Reply:that happened to me except the impact thingy. instead my gum where over my wisdom teeth so after i had the remove i had to go back to have my gums cut down. but dont be. over the past 7 years i have had so much surgery on my teeth. my parents have spent atleast 1 million dollars on them; no lie. i've had braces for 6-7 years, i had a dead tooth [ which they had to remove and take out this half tooth that was blocking my other "adult" tooth and they had to put a chain on it to pull it down; so juss imagine a tiny little chain sticking out of my gums attached to my braces], retainer, cavities, teeth removel, gums cut down, and some other stuff.

basickly i had alot of expericence with oral surgery. at first i was scared but i usually juss fall asleep or close my eyes. usually the doctors have music on or are talking to one another so i listen in. they might give you a shot. thats what the did to me.

some offer shots to numb you, laughing gas [which amazingly u dnt laugh and it smeels like soap], or they put you to sleep.

i think they put me to sleep.

but one thing you MUST do is follow their directions or you'll get a dry socket, those r not fun. they feel werid and they leave a funky taste in your mouth and they stink when you open your mouth. if you do get one, set up another appt. so they can fill it with this cream stuff. i never used it because by the time i relized i had it and set up the appt. i went away but for months i could taste it.

P.S. when my ma had a dry socket she said she could see her nerves and veins in the little hole. NASTY!
Reply:Years ago I had all my wisdom teeth pulled at one time and I was awake. They gave me SO much novocaine and then "laughing gas" so it was ok although I think I might of been a bit nervous at first. A few weeks ago I needed another molar pulled and it was really pleasant! I They gave me an IV and I went to sleep and it was over before I knew it! Try to get "put out", its a much better experience! Do follow their instructions for aftercare, and you should be fine. You will be a bit sore after, drink plenty of fluids (no straws) and take ibuprofen.

Wisdom teeth pain!?

My wisdom teeth in my upper teeth have already erupted, and they are perfectly fine. But my wisdom teeth in my bottom teeth looks like they are impacted. And im feeling pain. What should l do? Im seeing the dentist march 5 so dont suggest that please. Im thinking that theyre impacted, and i want to get them removed as soon as possible because they are getting more and more sore. Im 13, if that helps.

Wisdom teeth pain!?
Take some pain meds, and try icing your jaw; and tell the dentist when you go!
Reply:definitely get them out as soon as possible. its way better to when youre young.
Reply:Listen You have to go to the dentist I just got them out and you need to get them out i left my impacted teeth in and the pain does not stop so You have to go in as soon as possible because bealive me Getting your wisdom teeth out is worth it
Reply:The dentist will hopefully take a panographic x-ray to see exactly how badly impacted you wisdom teeth are, (if they are impacted) . It's totally up to the dentist wheather your wisdom teeth need to be extracted or not. You're feeling discomfort right now because you're teething just like when you were a baby and your teeth were erupting. You're kind of young to have your 3rd molars (wisdom teeth) removed. Also, if you have the lower 3rd molars removed, your dentist might suggest removing the upper 3rd molars because upper and lower teeth need their counterparts. If you don't have the upper 3rd molars removed, there is a possiblity of those teeth erupting further down. Good luck with everything and if possible ask to be sedated or at least have nitrous oxide along with the local.

Wisdom teeth? Dentist Please?

I'm 25 years old and I was wondering if that's too old for someone's wisdom teeth to come in. I started feeling a little pain last night and I thought I could feel something just under the surface. The pain went away this morning and it's just now coming back. Could this be something other than wisdom teeth? (Wishful thinking since I don't have health insurance and I don't really have a lot of extra money to get another surgery right now with car insurance coming up this month.)

I had both of my bottom wisdom teeth extracted, one of them was impacted. I'd rather not have to go through any more surgeries.

When the dentist took an x-ray of my upper teeth he saw them, but he told me that they would probably never come in. After 7 years, is it strange that they would all of a sudden decide to come in?

Before you guys say anything, I know it wasn't from something I ate or anything like that. I didn't have anything that day that could have scraped my gums or iritated them in any way

Wisdom teeth? Dentist Please?
I am 25 and had mine taken out a month ago cause they would always try to come in for a while then stop then a few months later flare up again. Best to get them out now. I am wishing I would have gotten mine out years ago. good luck
Reply:No some people actually have fits with them into their 40's they always try to push in at different times,
Reply:I'm 21 (22 at the end of the month) and just had my wisdom teeth out about a month ago so you're not much older than I am. But are you going to the dentist regularly? They should be doing X-rays of you and would be able to tell if your wisdom teeth were moving. I don't think you are too old to get them removed but I would go check with your dentist to see if thats the cause of the pain you're experiencing.

How long does it take for a wisdom tooth to fully crown, how long do you wait before realizing its impacted?

My wisdom teeth have only just begun to crown within the last couple days but one side of my mouth hurts like hell so how long before i know its impacted and does anyone know how to get free dental work in los angeles area?

How long does it take for a wisdom tooth to fully crown, how long do you wait before realizing its impacted?
there is no answer to this question becuz everyone has different rates of growth for their wisdom teeth. for instance, mine was growing for 5 years and it still didnt completely come out...since it was givin me so much pain i just went to dentist to pull them all out. but i know some other people who had their wisdom teeth fully crowned within 2 years or less. so...if it really pains u that much, go see a dentist to see if u should remove it. sometimes, it grows the wrong way, thats why it hurts so much and if it does grow the wrong way it will end up killing ur other teeth too.
Reply:When my wisdom teeth were coming through I couldn't move my jaw left to right without pain.

Went to the hospital (because I had a broken jaw a couple of months before), they sent me to the hospital dentist ... then had to operate straight away. They knocked me out and took out four of my wisdom teeth that were growing underneath my back teeth .... so lost eight in an hour.

Go to the dentist now and get them to x-ray. It only takes a couple of days for them to grow. If you have pain, then it probably is coming through but cannot because it's under your back tooth.
Reply:You should go to the dentist and they will be able to see if it is coming in right. When your wisdom teeth come in, it will hurt a bit, but as long as there is room for them, the pain should be over soon. You can get free dental work at a dental school, such as bryman college. There is always a dentist there, and none of the procedures are major, alot of times they can fill cavities for free as well. They can take free xrays to make sure that your wisdoms are fine. Hope the pain is done soon, and hope you can find a free dental place!

Wisdom teeth?

I had my wisdom teeth taken out on thursday morning and my stiches on one side literally just came out and i'm worried it's too soon. Also the where my bottom teeth were removed there is still some strong pain and most people are saying that they didn't need medicine after two days. however my bottom teeth were called "bony impacted" does that have more pain and last longer? i'm just concernedi might have dry socket or something

Wisdom teeth?
Women on birth control or smokers have a higher risk of dry socket. Bony impaction also increase your risk. Normally after two to three days the majority of the pain should be gone. If it still hurts to the point where you feel you need pain meds go back to your oral surgeon or dentist, it probably is dry socket. They will rinse the area out and disinfect it. Don't worry about the stitches.
Reply:give yourself a few more days. especially if you had all of the taken out, I had one and it was really bad and it took around a week in a half to stop taking my pain meds. if you had dry socket you would be in sooo much pain. just give yourself some more time
Reply:Bony impacted means what it sounds like. They probaby had to cut deeper so you will have a bit more pain the normal. Call your oral surgon or dentist to ask about the stiches and to talk about your concerns about dry socket.
Reply:Everyone is different, I didnt took medicine for 3 days my sister took it for two weeks. Give yourself more time, it may take a week or more before you stop using medicine. About your stiches if you started bleeding again I would notify my doctor.
Reply:Call on the Dental Office, where the wisdom teeth were extracted, they should be answering your questions as part of the treatment. Express the concern to them about the dry socket as well. After all they do get paid and your care should be part of their service. Any concern of yours should be a part of the treatment, and they should give you their professional guidance, until you are completely healed
Reply:Unless there is lots of blood oozing out don't worry about the stiches, mine came out pretty quickly also and I bled for about three afterwards but it was fine. I think if you had dry socket then you'll be doubled over with pain and you'd have the worst bad breath ever!! My dentist gave me enough pain meds for a week and a half - two weeks so I think it's normal enough you're still in pain. It'll go. If you're worried get the dentist to check it out in case the wounds got infected.

Does anyone have any tips on Post Op. for wisdom teeth?

I just had my wisdom teeth extracted because they were impacted. I had all four removed? I'm a whimp becasue i cant take this discomfort. It was my first time getting surgery done. Was very successful. Just that the post op. is killing me.

Does anyone have any tips on Post Op. for wisdom teeth?
I had mine removed about a year ago so I feel your pain!! Lots of soft foods is a must. Such as jello, pudding, mashed potatoes, soups, egg noodles, etc. Be really careful to avoid really sharp foods like chips!! I had the misfortune of thinking I was ready to eat more normally and it caught on the back of my gum and I almost died! (ok not really died, but you get the picture). Oh and smoking and drinking with straws is a big NO-NO. It can cause dry sockets which is basically a really painful infection.
Reply:Don't be like me. I ate nothing but Pintos and Cheese from Taco Bell for the first couple days after my wisdom teeth were extracted and I received my first and only case of constipation!

How long does a typical wisdom teeth surgery last?

How long would it take to extract 4 wisdom teeth and 2 that are impacted? under IV sedation. (looking for answers from people who got the surgery outside of the US)

How long does a typical wisdom teeth surgery last?
up to an hour/ hour and a half including preparation %26amp; recovery time.
Reply:We live in Calcutta, India. My wife had to have four impacted wisdom teeth out, and the dentist took roughly 45 minutes for each tooth. Of course, he took out two in one sitting, and two in the next.

It's not as bad as you think.
Reply:30 to 90 minutes. my mom had hers removed. just be careful once you wake up from the anesthesia...you will feel a bit wooooozy..VERY sleepy and groggy. just a warning.

a lot of ppl have this surgery. its nbd. just tell ur dentist to make sure u dont swallow a lot of blood....dont ask me y. swallowing the blood has NASSSSTY consequences.
Reply:I had my wisdom teeth taken out at the dentist for the two top and the hospital for the two bottom as they were impacted. I wasnt put to sleep though just given a local. It seemed to take a lifetime but in reality it was about an hour for both bottom teeth to come out. It was a bit painful afterwards but nothing compared to the pain prior to having them removed.

make sure you get a good anaesthetic (how do you spell it?)

My dentist would not extract 6 teeth in one session. Se believes it to put unnecessary strain on the heart etc.

(and I believe she gets paid more for multiple treatments!)

I may be out of date as it's 30 years since I needed it done. I also hate needles; not the pain but the thought of a needle really gets to me.

I would get at least two opinions as to the best treatment for your condition before lying back in the chair.

Good luck!
Reply:I don't think there's any such thing as a typical wisdom tooth surgery because everyone is different. However, I suggest you ask this question on the site www.dentalfearcentral.com where lots of people have had this type of procedure and you might get a more balanced opinion.
Reply:from start to finish under iv sedation?

you'll be in the chair for less than an hour if the surgeon is good and if the teeth are easy to remove.

Keep smiling,
