Wisdom teeth-Dry sockets!? HELP!?

I'm getting my wisdom teeth out soon(4, NOT impacted, I'm young) and I had 2 questions. First of all, I heard you're more likely to get dry sockets if you smoke. Does that mean if you smoke during the healing process, or if you smoked a few days before the procedure?

Also: SWELLING.

I'm getting my teeth out Friday and I'm starting school Wednesday. Do you think I'll still look like a chipmunk? Haha. If worse comes to worse, I can get off wednesay, thursday, and friday. Overall, that would give me 10 days off. Will the swelling go down by then? Thanks!!!!!

I'm kinda realllllly scared to get them out!!

Wisdom teeth-Dry sockets!? HELP!?
THEY SAY SMOKING WHILE IN THE HEALING PROCESS CAN GIVE YOU A DRY SOCKET......WHAT IT REALLY MEANS IS THIS....WHEN YOU SUCK ON A CIGARETTE YOU CAN DISLODGE THE BLOOD CLOT...SAME AS DRINKING OR EATING WHEN YOU SUCK ON A STRAW OR SWALLOW TO HARD......

I DIDNT HAVE MUCH SWELLING AT ALL WHEN I HAD MY WISDOM TEETH PULLED.....IT DID TAKE A WHILE FOR THEM TO HEAL THOUGH.....
Reply:It means smoking during the healing process. I got mine out about 3 years ago and was nervous but you'll be happy that you did it. I wasn't too swollen and if your's are not impaced you shouldn't be either.

Good Luck!
Reply:Take off Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, you will need it. Smoking or sucking on something can dislodge the scab that is over the surgical site and cause a dry socket. I hear it is really painful to get a dry socket, so follow the doctor's orders.
Reply:Both. So, do not smoke. Smoking (sucking hard) prevents the formation of clots. Make sure that after you have your wisdom teeth extracted you follow your Dentists instructions rigidly. Additionally, put ice bags on both sides of your face. Ice will speed up the clotting process and will also numb some of the pain. If you do this, you will be ready to go back to school on wednesday.
Reply:sweetie don't worry so much. if your teeth aren't impacted you may not feel any pain at all. we hope.

i have had my wisdom teeth out with impaction and one time a dry socket with another tooth.

a dry socket is when your tongue or suction pulls out the clotting material out of the socket where your tooth was. be very careful not to let that happen. that's why they tell you not to drink with a straw or to smoke. its the suction. be very careful when you smoke. draw in carefully, keep the gauze there as long as possible too. when you rinse your mouth with salt water or whatever the dentist tells you to do, do it gently!!!!!!! and insist the dentist give you vicodan or some kind of strong pain reliever, not advil, motrin, etc. none of that crap where they tell you, call if you need something and then they are unreachable for several days while you suffer. so watch your back. do what i told you and you'll be ok, promise.

good luck. happy xmas
Reply:Please dont be scared to get these wisdom teeth removed....more so, since you say these are not impacted. Regarding your first question on smoking, it is the smoke during the healing process that is harmful.....but saying that appears funny to me cos' the smoking is bad for us ALWAYS. So, why not take this opportunity and Christmas season to quit (kick) this habit. Choice, well, of course is yours....smoking or health, you cant have both.

Now regarding 2nd part, yes of course, the healing after the extraction of non-impacted wisdom teeth in healthy individuals is quite uneventful..........just follow what your dentist says.

Enjoy Christmas...merry Christmas and all the very best !!
