Wisdom Teeth Removal?

Hi I have a few questions about wisdom teeth removal. Three of my wisdom teeth come in seemingly normal, but my lower left wisdom tooth is impacted pretty badly. I am going to have to have them removed. I have my consultation on Thursday, and I know that the dentists sugar coat everything to make you more comfortable, but I am looking for actual experiences of wisdom teeth removal. I'm not really that afraid of the actual procedure, because as long as I don't feel anything, I'll be fine. I've never really gotten nervous at doctor or dentist appts and I don't really have a needle phobia. What I'm most worried about is the after effects. Is it terribly painful the days following the procedure? Will they give me any pain medicine? How long does the pain usually last after the procedure is done (days? weeks?)? Thanks for any advice! It is truly greatly appreciated!

It should be alright so long as ur not allergic to the medicine they give you. That happend to me and it was notpretty i threw up for a whole 24 hours afterwards. Its not that bad if u dont have an allergic reaction to the meds. youll be pretty loopy for a few hours but the pain should dull over the few hours afterwards and then ull just have puffy cheeks. dont sweat it
Reply:I know that most people do experience pain...thankfully I did not. The only time it was painful at all is when I would wake up and didn't have any pain medication in my system (pain was minimal.) Yes, they will give you pain killers. Pain might last a few days or longer depending on whether or not you get dry sockets. Just make sure you follow all the directions so that you do not get dry sockets.
Reply:I had all four of mine removed at the same time. As long as you take the pain medication on time as prescribed for minimum 3 days you will be OK.
Reply:I was worried too, but it is really no big thing. I had mine out 2 at a time (Top then bottom) and the recovery wasn't very long. I was eating within days. Remember, the mouth heals really fast, so it isn't like any other surgery. It was sore afterwards, but they give you some GREAT painkillers to take care of that. Just take your painkillers and antibiotics and nap a lot (you won't have a problem there because the pain meds knock you out).
Reply:OK the only thing you should feel at the dentist is a lot of pressure no big deal there. I did have some pain after but the pain was not nearly as bad as the pain caused by all 4 of mine being impacted then infected on top. The pain only last a couple of days and they do give pain meds. I can tell you this if you have headaches often expect some of them to stop. You'd never think that something so normal as wisdom teeth could be the cause of so much pain at times. After mine were pulled the migraines mysteriously stopped altogether!
Reply:I had the same problem. Pain was minor during the procedure. But opening the jaw that long was painful. Also my whole face was slightly swollen for a week or so.
Reply:I had all four removed at the same time about a year ago. Two were impacted very badly.

They will give you pain medication after the procedure. I think I got Panadeine Forte, which is a very strong dose of paracetamol.

It is painful afterwards but I was able to prevent a lot of the pain. I kept my jaw almost constantly iced. I used one of those blue gel ice packs you can buy at the pharmacy and that helped so much. For me, the really bad pain was over with in a couple of days. My oral surgeon recommended I take a week off work, so I would say a week of pain is average for most people.

Make sure you have someone to take you home. You will be in no condition to drive or make your own way home. I was so sleepy after mine and was quite forgetful too. I was glad I had someone there with me who could listen to the surgeon's post-op instructions, because I would have forgotten them. That depends on what kind of sedation you're having though. I had IV sedation.
Reply:Two of mine were impacted. Honestly, it was super painful after the freezing wore off. I was given t-3's, and it was a week or so until i was eating solid food. So make sure you have lots of liquidy food that you enjoy. (ice cream and jello work wonders =] ) Good luck with your surgery!!
